Tips for Removing Urine Odour from Lounge

Our cat has, at some stage, likely a week or more ago, urinated on our couch in the back room. I only noticed the offensive odour today.

I have ordered some odour removal spray from pet barn but in the meantime was looking for any tips or tricks anyone might suggest.

I am hoping to have friends over on Friday so hopefully I can remove the smell by then!

      wouldn't that suffocate the cat?

To counteract it, you're going to need the 'opposite' odour. Do you have access to a dog?

  • There are special products specifically for removing cat urine odour. Go to your local big pet chain and look for products like Nature's Miracle that specialise in this. There are other brands but I've personally used the Nature's Miracle one and it worked exceptionally well.

Don't just go for the odour removal sprays, look for the actual cleaning sprays/solvents that often require subsequent vaccuming or a good soaking/drying cycle. You need something that's really going to penetrate the couch if it's been there for over a week. If you do just go for the spray, after testing a patch to make sure it doesn't stain, go crazy with it and soak that cushion! You need to get right on there or the smell will return.

    • I've ordered Natures Miracle Cat Advance Stain Odour Spray, hopefully that'll do the job. I'm just worried because I don't know how long the smell has been there soaking for!

You could try washing the affected area (if you can locate the specific patch of urine on the couch) with an enzymatic laundry detergent such as BioZet. You are looking for a product which breaks down the ammonia and therefore neutralises the smell. I think this is what the odour removers do as well - so you could give it an initial clean with something like this before the product you have ordered arrives. You will want to thoroughly wet the area that was affected then make sure you blot up all of the water (and the urine) and dry out the area.

I think this will take a bit of work and you have a short time line - I'm not sure you will be able to use your couch this weekend.

  • Sorry to say but you need a new couch. And a new cat.

      I'll give it a shot!

  • Is it a leather couch or a cloth couch?
If it's cloth, uou could try to remove the back or bottom "covers" to reach the bits of the cushions that may have been soaked with the glorious urine.

    • Cloth. I plan on removing all the cushions and locating the urine spots with a UV torch and then going crazy with the spray lol

      • Depending on what they're made of, you probably could remove the cushion covers and soak the actual cushions. Just make sure they're thoroughly dried afterwards.

  • White vinegar and bi carb is a magical solution that seems to take care of any bad smells…and it's fun to watch it foam up.
