Advice for buying new Mazda Cx5 (NSW)

Hi,

Got a call from the mother-in-law saying that she wants to buy a new mid-sized SUV. Cash money. Good time of year with the EOFY as well so hoping to make some real savings.

After a bit of researching we landed two options: Mazda Cx5 KF series, either the Touring ($38,990) or the GT ($43,390) variants. GT is an extra $5400 (gets you fancy sound system, sunroof, leather seats, bigger wheels, fancy pants seats and headlights)

Now I'm turning to the community for some advice:

  • some forums start with the invoice price. where/how do I find the invoice price, is can I use the Redbook valuation is this the price I should be negotiating from?
  • stamp duty, rego and dealer charges. My negotiated price should include these right?
  • extras. Obviously will ask for the usual car mats, tints, full tank of petrol, cargo tray and maybe a couple of free services but do I start by naming my optional accessories or do I add them on after I've landed a price? As the Touring already comes with front parking sensors, we're also looking for rear parking sensors or at least a rear camera
  • has anyone else bought from Mazda recently? Any advice how low my initial price should be (or what my upper limit)?

Thanks in advance!

Yup - called a drive away price.

or do I add them on after I've landed a price?

You'll get screwed on trying to add accessories after locking in a price. Need to negotiate everything in one go.

Check whirlpool - it's a very popular car there. Lots of people posting prices.

    • Thanks! Will check wp

  • Generally I start at 10% below RRP and shop around 4-5 dealers. But there's a brand new CX5 model this year so the room to negotiate will be less. On the other hand, if you go for last years model (there's probably still a few around) you could easily haggle more than 10%. And only work on the driveaway price - you don't want them adding rego and dealer delivery after you've settled on price..

    • I was thinking about last year's model too, if the savings are big enough and they'll want to get rid of run out stock then I'll run it by mum in law

      • if the savings are big enough and they'll want to get rid of run out stock

My observation has been that demo/last year model is only $500-$1000 cheaper.

The best I can guess is, there's always people that buy and hold a car for 10+ years. Those buyers are happy with the 1k saving. When you hold a car for that long, a few extra KMs or model year doesn't really affect the resale price.

  • Touring already comes with reversing camera and a front parking sensors as standard.

    • Thanks, must have missed that

  • FYI, ended up going through a car broker

    Delivered in Sept

    KF series
    GT variant

    Extras:
    Car mats
    Cargo tray
    Tank of petrol
    Tints

    $44,200 drive away

    • Thanks - what was your negotiation strategy?

Also did you go one of their premium $300 extra colours?

      • We got the snowflake white pearl paint (is that premium?)

At first went to two dealers - Ryde then Parramatta. Offered 40,then 42 and finally 44. Ryde were more willing to negotiate to around $46k. Parra barely budged beneath the rrp even though it was EOFY.

Then we approached the broker and said we didn't want to pay more than $44000.

Could we have got a lower price? Not sure, but reading through whirlpool, $44k for the GT (through a broker) seemed to be the lowest price so far

        Hope that helps

        • Definitely - we're wondering whether to wait a little longer given that no one seemed to budge during EOFY sales, mostly because this is the newly released model.

We tried to push for $42-43k for the grey model ($300 premium paint), the same extras as you plus wind shield and bonnet protector. This was at Rockdale Mazda and they said we needed to come much closer to the about 10% off their RRP ($46k).

Which broker did you use and were there any costs associated? We haven't quite landed on whether to go through them or not.

        • @tokziktigah: pm sent

        • @vietbargain: I'd also love to know which broker you used. We're looking at a CX-5 some time over the next 5 months, trying to build up a negotiating strategy.
