Steam Cleaning Carpet in New Homes - Do or Don't?

Hi all,

New house – past our 6+ months and so finally painting after giving time for settlement cracks to develop. The mrs is not that satisfied with my vacuuming of plaster dust when i sand down the sealer/patching. She wants to clean it and given we have a new bed/mattress coming in this weekend I don't think we'll have time to hire someone in (i saw ouffer website had one of those group discount buys for celtic cleaning, $49 or something for 3 bedrooms). Not to mention i have not had the time to have the other bedrooms sanded down and patched/sanded again ready for painting. So a cleaner couldn't get started anyway.

My suggestion was she can hire the britex or rug doctor steam cleaners from bunnings and DIY herself while i'm busy painting if so.

Discussions with work mates seemed to advise that cleaning new carpet was something to avoid – as the underlay and generally carpet should avoid getting wet and ruined, and that i should stick to just vacuuming. Particularly that it's a new carpet and not say a rental where steam/deep cleaning is necessary to revitalise.

Just curious on those who are experienced in the area (or any carpet cleaners) if indeed we should avoid cleaning the carpet. We always thought a built house would have had various trades and people walking all over it and so the thought of a liquid (steam/deep clean) cleaning sounded 'ideal'. Not sure about the practical side. The carpet is base level entry, same for underlay, so not sure if as co-workers said dyes and other materials could be harmed by the cleaner?

I suggested just vacuuming as per normal, maybe even a slightly damp cloth to surface wipe carpet. Mrs is more sensitive/abit of a flower when it comes to these things so she feels it isn't enough – and that her skin is still feeling sensitive/itchy. However, she was working on the room with me so obviously its alot more plaster dust laden than post-cleanup and a full vacuum. I think it's in her head – but am happy to clean if even for the placebo effect. Don't want it to be at the detriment of adversely affecting the carpet given it's new. Is it normal to deep/steam clean carpet in new construction houses?

  • Hi OP, not really directly answering your question but if the Missus is sensitive to dust/dirt was there an option for wood/tiled flooring instead of carpet (especially since it's a new house)?
I personally dislike carpet for this reason too (I feel like I can never really get carpet clean).

Hope you get your question answered!
