80 Channel - UHF CB Radio (Uniden 5000)

Hi All

Sorry if I'm asking noob questions. Just about to buy one of these using the Ebay 15% deal and as it expires today I have had to accelerate my purchasing decision - would've preferred to research a bit more but oh well. Can anyone with a bit of experience let me know if there is any unknown traps that I am unaware of with purchasing this?

Aerial, mount and aerial cable I will purchase separate - 3 or 4.5 db aerial

They say it is 80 channel "ready" - Does this mean anything as having to state the obvious just makes me wary, as 40 channel were phased out?

Can you recommend something better in the same price?

My usage is pretty much convoy or state forests within 5 hours of Sydney for hunting. So don't need the best on the market.

Cheers

  • Also this one as well which is slightly cheaper:

The list of functions are almost identical

My main functionality requirement is just auto channel scanning - That's about it.

Did you buy this? As a heads up for future users, Uniden failed with 80 ch implementation. See, the powers that be when they introduced 80 channels, split existing bandwidth, they didnt expand it. So basically ch 41 sits between ch 1 and ch 2. Ch 42 sits between 2 and 3. Obviously the channel selector seems to be consecutive. Its because spacing was how they made the change, they dropped from 25khz between channels to 12.5 and sat the new channels in between each existing channel, leaving the existing 40 where they were. That is they moved from wideband, to narrowband.

So what happens is a Uniden can at times be heard on an old school 40 ch as a whisper, between 80s it will be fine. You might think you dont care until you realise that means some people will not hear you, and plenty have opted to stick with the 40ch radio they paid good money for and still works. Now it matters.

I asked Uniden recently how they handled it currently and their response was ask the other bloke to turn his volume up. LOL. Sure, Ill radio him and… oh wait. Not that it matters, its well known in radio circles and they have tried the increase volume trick. Its still a whisper.

ICOM and GME for example have the option to set each channels bandwidth to narrow or wide so they dont have this problem. Uniden last I heard still havent bothered. And the old 40 ch are perfectly legal to use, and widely used still. The old thought they would be banned is now not going to happen.

Uniden needs to get its act together IMO.

    • Hey, thanks for the information appreciate it being so detailed. I actually didn't end up buying the radio, I do like a good deal but I thought the better of it and just rushing into it wasn't ideal. Instead I got a really good deal on a GME twin pack through 4wd Action, limited stock only. They were GME TX675 2 watt handhelds (way more versatile). What I plan to do is run a vehicle roof mount (4.5 db gain) antenna into the cab, and if I ever need the extended range I'll just hook one of my handhelds into the antenna, but otherwise they should be fine for convoy travel or communicating back to camp and suit my purposes as I do not go THAT remote. It was a dam good deal at $99 as I get the twin pack, free delivery, 10 DVD's and 10 Magazines - otherwise a twin pack for this would set you back around the $180 mark without the additional content. This will hold me over until I have enough coin to splurge on a decent long range vehicle mount radio, this will also most likely be a GME as I have heard nothing but good reviews on GME and Icom.
