Help Me Purchase New Laptop Please - Budget $1,000

Hi all, infrequent member here so please excuse the tech newbie that I am!

I need to purchase a new laptop tonight, preferably
As old Lenovo Thinkpad T400 died after approx 8 years (just tells you how newbie I am!)
My feeling is I should just replace with what I had.

So went to Bing Lee and JBHIFI only
These are the options

  1. Lenovo ideapad 510 15.6 screen, 8GB 1Tb hard drive i7 7500U processor
    Win10 home. $997. Bing Lee

  2. Lenovo ideapad 310 15.6" screen, 8 Gb 128GB SSD, i7 7500U
    Win10 home. $950 JBHIFI

The main differences from what I can tell, is the larger memory on the 510. However I think the 510 is an outdated model

I need to add Office professional, and Publisher, for my work. Currently have over 10k photos need to store (using iCloud atm). Also do I need a good antivirus or should I just download AVG.

Any guidance on this purchase most appreciated
TIA

Skip the Ideapads… they are nothing like Lenovo Thinkpads.

Ideapads are consumer lines meant for home usage and won't hold a candle to Thinkpad T series.
In terms of cheapness, Ideapads sit at the very bottom, followed by E-series, Yoga or L-series and then T-series.

Have a look at this thread and consider some of the recommendations in there.

also try E570p. This is a high end Lenovo laptop, downside is that it's pretty heavy.

for Antivirus, you can use anything you want, but free options can be just as good as paid options. Keeping your apps and OS updated is probably more important.

  • Thank you all great info :)

  • I wouldn't bother with a antivirus with Windows 10.

  • Thanks all. Went with the T470 with 16Ram direct from Lenovo $1693 all up with Office Professional
There may have been better deals out there, but i don't know enough to drive this further.
    Thanks again. Susie

Another option is the Xiaomi Air 13 notebook for around the same price.

Anyone know if this laptop is likely to drop in price soon, given that laptops are moving to Kabylake processors? Or is the AU$937 at Gearbest as good as it's likely to get?

I paid USD $ 644.96 from LightInTheBox shipped with DHL 4 weeks ago, arrived in 8 days.
Converted to AUD$872.34 on Bankwest Plat CC.

  • If you have a costco in your city you could check out their laptops. Their membership is $60/year but it's worth it because you get between $100-400 cheaper laptops. I bought my 1700 laptop for only 1200. In your case you could pay around 700 for your product plus 60.

  • Better to go with option 1 I use the same laptop its great never had an issue with it.
