Really disappointed to see this: No, unfortunately the Eve Room has no Android App the moment.. Perhaps it should be tagged with [Apple]

wow $39 for a wireless reed switch. I paid under $10 for my Xiaomi one.
Good to see the apple ecosystem tax is alive & well.

Remove postage and the result is an Elgato decision, not Apple. I doubt the difference is due to the required homekit chip. Would you put your house security in the hands of random Android devs?

        • +2

Because random Apple devs are so much more trustworthy…

        • @pegaxs:

Apple's homekit has been very carefully designed with security in mind.

          Much more so than Android.

          @pegaxs:
Apart from shitty adverts in free games, yes they are 100%.

I'm not sure whats it got to do with android dev? Xiaomi make apps for IOS & Android. But there's other open source software like Domoticz and Home Assistant, which are platform agnostic (you can run them on your NAS box, Raspberry Pi, etc) which also work with the Xiaomi hardware.

It's just detecting whether the switch is open or closed (using a magnet) & then does something (like send you an alert of there's a change in state). Not really a IOSvsAndroid security thing.

anyway my point is the price difference, for essentially the same thing, a wireless reed switch, but 4 time the price.

        • @SirDale: How so?

and what Android security kit are you talking about?

        • @supabrudda:

All the communication b/w products in homekit are encrypted. Certified products have to use a certified chip (e.g. elgato's homekit chip) that implements the basic protocols. The discussions you have with Siri and the product likewise are unknown to Apple (data is anonymised).

I've not seen any initiative in the Android world to replicate this, or to put security/privacy as one of the frontmost considerations.

        • Ok, so what's Android got to do with this?
Xiaomi's sub $10 wireless reed switch & other sensors also encrypts info, it doesnt detect/transmit/etc your voice (again what has siri got to do with a wireless switch, etc?)

not sure why you've decided to make this a apple vs android thing. it's a wireless reed switch vs wireless reed switch price comparison.

        • @supabrudda:

You need to go back and read your own post. You were the one who started up with the "Good to see the apple ecosystem tax is alive & well." line, implying that you don't get value for money for Apple products.

The next post was "Would you put your house security in the hands of random Android devs?" which is what I was replying to, not to your posting.

      • But isn't apple HomeKit so you need a seperate app

They have been this price since the Belkin Wemo kits were on special the other week - I've nearly purchased a couple of times, but the reviews aren't that great on this series of products (have a look at the Amazon reviews).

Great price (compared to the RRP), but the products aren't for everyone.

  • What is the point of these things? How do you get remote access to your reed switch which only got blue tooth……..

    • If I'm not mistaken, if you have an Apple TV you might be able to connect it to the Apple TV.

    • Did you read the article. iPhone, iPad iPod etc or remote access Apple TV

Apple TV is usually a HomeKit hub

      • Or a recent gen iPad works fine but it obviously needs to be at home all the time for it to work.

        • it indicates on the website that you can get notifications when the switch changes state (i.e. goes Open -> shut or shut -> open) on your phone (via Apple TV).

          https://www.elgato.com/en/eve/eve-door-window

If it doesn't work remotely, then that's a bit limiting.

      • Just don't know why cant they have wifi on it. Maybe they just want to lock us up with apple products.

        • Pretty sure it's 2 things - price and power.
Bluetooth 4.0 is less of both.

        • There are cheap chinese ones. It they won't connect to the HomeKit suite

        • @asa79: See your point. Apple is more likely to be able to get other manufactures to support their smart home system. But before the smart home system gets smarter and cheaper, i would stick with my $30 camera who did alert me there was a bug flying around when i was overseas….

        • @DoyA: but would it turn on your lights Or turn on your a/c or heater when the temp changes

        • @asa79: well, it is just a $30 camera. cant complain it does not have these feature…

    • I just want the reed switch so I can be lazy and check the garage door when I'm laying in bed and get paranoid that I forgot to close it.
