Laptop graphics card need to display 3 screen

Just wated to know if i should be focusing on a laptop with a specific graphics card if i want to have three displays. (that is 2 x 23" monitors (1920x1200) plus the laptop screen (1080) all running at the same time)

Not looking to run '3d stuff'(games, graphics etc), just mainly productivlity tools (office, toad etc).

I would prefer to be able to do this without buying a 100's of dongles, special adaptops and cables.
(docking station is fine)

  • my thinkpad can do this now
    1. laptop screen
    2. hdmi to montior 1
    3. display port (using cheap ebay hdmi adaptor) to monitor 2

    laptop usually has email
monitor 1 usually has dev work
monitor 2 usually has testing browser

    • yep thats exaclty what i want to set up at home

  • oh that is my dream setup, to have 3 or 4 screens

  • If all the monitors are displayport v1.2 compatible, you can daisy chain them together fairly easily.

  • I'm certain most kaby lake CPUs like the i7-7500u or i5-7200u in most ultrabooks can drive 3 monitors with its internal iGPU such as the intel HD 620. A dedicated GPU is always preferred though
You should find a laptop with 2 display outputs like hdmi/minidisplay port/displayport/thunderbolt 3

    More info from intel here

  • have 3 monitors running off a dell work laptop that sits in a docking station, it would only do 2 monitors at first then after a bios update am able to run 3

  • My work laptop drives its display and 2x 1080p displays, it's an HP elitebook with no graphics card and an i5-4210u. It has a proprietary docking station however.

So suggest you look for something with a properitary docking station connector or a thunderbolt port. You can also get USB 3.0 docking stations, I haven't had any experience with them but I understand that you can get some lag with them.

  • Running a HP Elitebook 840 here with 3 screens (including the laptop screen)
Has 2x Displayports on its dock, no problems with lag or quality.

Maybe grab a USB-VGA adaptor and use with any laptop of your choice?

  • Look into a business spec laptop. Ideally something with a docking station.

I have that exact set up at work. Using DVI for one monitor and HDMI for the other

  • My work issued Dell e7250 can run two screens (21 inch?) + the laptop screen using the dock.

  • Thanks all this has given me few options to think about.
