Help Me Choose an NBN Plan and Provider?

Hi, all! I am relatively new to NBN and have not the slightest clue about which ISPs are good and which are bad. I am currently on VDSL2 with iiNet and am loving my plan getting 40mb/s. I would (obviously) like a reliable ISP that provides constant speeds. I have looked this up online and the answers from people are fairly inconclusive. I will miss my speeds but wouldn't like to pay much more than 70/month for the plan. Also wondering how consistent their quoted speeds are? If I choose a 1-12mb/s plan, will I get screwed over and get very slow speeds?

    Aussie Broadband.

will I get screwed over and get very slow speeds?

Any provider that offers unlimited quota will get you that.

    • Ah. Was looking on reddit thats why. May I ask, have you had experience with them yourself?

I'm about to switch to them once my plan with SkyMesh comes to an end on the 20th. I've heard excellent things about them (but then again, I did with SkyMesh before they got bought out), and given the offer I posted above gives you a month free trial, you haven't got much to lose.

It was a toss up between ABB and Telecube, and ABB had the more straightforward plans - Telecube has a bunch of varied offers (searching Whirlpool), so if you'd like to try hunting down something suitable for you, you're welcome to try, but you did say you had little knowledge/experience with this sort of thing so I thought I'd just point you at ABB for simplicity's sake.

    • +1 for Aussie broadband been with them for 4 months now and have not had a single issue with the setup or connection. They also manage their own network which means you shouldn't get any 6pm slow downs when everyone is online https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/blog/aussie-broadbands-po… I also like the fact that they only have month to month contracts, no setup fees, and you can add additional data blocks should you over your data allowance. Great ISP in my opinion.

    • Hey thanks for the link! I just have a (maybe stupid) question. It's been so long since I've had an internet plan which wasn't "unlimited". How much internet does one actually need on average? I'm guessing 500gb is actually enough for most small families?

  • Presumably you're in the ACT?
    Are you getting FttN NBN?
(ie is NBN just taking over the iiNet VDSL?)
How much data do you use per month?

If you're getting 40mbps now and then switch to an NBN 12 mbps plan, you'll only get 12mbps..
Similarly if you buy an NBN 25mbps plan you'll only get 25mbps.
To retain your 40mbps speed you'll need to buy a 50mbps plan.

    • Yeah I am in Canberra. No I believe it is brand new infrastructure. In Molonglo Valley. Yes, but the website says from 1-12mb/s. I am wondering whether I will ever get 12mb/s? I am fine with that speed if it's constant. I have heard of people paying for 100mb/s Telstra and only getting 5.

Edit: Looking at the fact that you are from Perth I'm guessing a straight answer to that will be kinda hard since you don't rely on the same infrastructure as me but could you just tell me what yours is like?

I'm from Adelaide.. on FttN, I get a maximum line rate of 33/16 mbps (down/up) on FttN (which is VDSL2)
        NBN has speed tiers
        12/1
        25/5
        25/10
        50/20 and
        100/40

I'm connected on a 50/20 plan with Telecube* (I'd be on a 100/40 plan if possible, but it's not) in order to maximise my connection.

If you have Foxtel Cable down your street, there's a fair chance you'll be getting HFC NBN, which ought to be capable of the full 100mbps as NBN are upgrading the endpoints to dramatically improve the connection speeds possible.

But you'll only see those speeds at all times of day if you go with a quality provider.
Aussie Broadband are the current top pick.
Telstra are also always up there

        My tip is to ignore any ISP that offers Unlimited NBN… for the following reasons;
        1) It's an outright lie (there is nothing free/unlimited in life)
        2) It attracts people who want to download the internet every month
        3) They're always priced at the lower end

Facts are that it costs a bomb to service customers at 100mbps on the NBN…
ISP's either need to manage the number of people connected and pulling down at max speed at any one time or increase their plan costs in order to buy extra capacity.

End result is that Unlimited Plan ISP's tend to have congested networks in peak hours. It's as a result of these ISP's that most of the horror stories about NBN arise.

*My plan on Telecube is data limited and rate limited… I have a 500Gb/month allowance and from that, a 50Gb/day allowance AND I can only download a maximum of 5Gb/hour during 6pm-midnight.
Those limitations fit well under my needs.
As a result, despite paying a bargain basement $54/month (on a limited time offer that is no longer available) I'm seeing consistently good speeds no matter the time of day (also factor in that my connection is sadly nowhere near 100mbps, so YMMV)

        • Appreciate the help a lot! It has pretty much made up my mind. Thinking I am going to go Aussie Broadband 25/10 500Gb a month.
