Cheap PC for a friend's mum

Hi guys,

My mate was going to upgrade his mum's PC as it's become unusable. I explained that it's probably cheaper to go out and get a new one.

So, can anyone advise on a cheap laptop or desktop that's sufficiently powered to keep an old girl happy?

Cheers

    What's wrong with it?

I think reformatting and adding a SSD would be a good option.

I think it's just really, really old. Upgrading would need just about everything changing out.

Pick any cheap Inspiron laptop PC from the Dell Outlet. Choose one that has an SSD drive preinstalled.

Otherwise buy a cheap Sandisk 240GB SSD from any PC shop, and do the upgrade yourself.

Also depending on age the current system, it could be logical to do an upgrade, mainly the SSD and perhaps RAM if there is less than 4GB.

but if they are not tech savvy and you are not patient enough to teach them how to fix a computer, I'd recommend buying a new PC instead.

Check out the ex-lease Optiplex PCs on ebay. you could get an older gen i7/i5 for a little over $200.

  • What's the specs of the current one? Agree with moneybaby; depending on the specs an SSD might be a good option.

    Dell Factory Outlet: http://www.dell.com/learn/au/en/audhs1/campaigns/dell-outlet…

Inspiron or Optiplex are your best options.

  • or you could go on gumtree searching for a pc with 'good specs' only to find out later the person has probably already sold his 'fake computer ad listed on gumtree' and placed a fake picture only to say' ad is no longer available or has been removed on gumtree.

    • Not all ads are fake on Gumtree. I have purchased many PC's from there and some for a bargain.

The catch is to have knowledge on PC hardware and what you are looking for. Also to ensure that they are not too far away so you don't travel too far, just in case it's not what they listed or has issues.

The only neg is that you may get prcks that change their mind and bullsit to you that there is an issue some or other poor excuse to turn you away as they have sold it to another higher bidder after you have made the deal.

Obviously you get the know the pattern or have gut feeling after experience.

This happened to me a couple of times where I am on the way to pick up the item, the seller suddenly text some rubbish excuse for you to stop coming or they got a higher bidder. However is it very minor.

Btw, most are from affluent suburbs believe it or not.

      A deal is a deal I believe.

If it is too good to be true, then most likely it is.

Cash Converters in another good place to look. At least the sale is guaranteed and the item is warranted for 3 months.

      Cheers
