Why Is Rego So Expensive in The ACT?

About to purchase my first car in the ACT, and I'm shocked by the cost of registration. In Victoria, the cost of registration is around $700 yearly, but to register a car in the ACT I'm being asked to pay $1200 - almost twice as much! My parents remember paying less than $500 for rego only a few years ago - why has registration gotten so expensive recently?

Registration in some states of the US is only $50, or less - 1/20th of the cost!

  • Best move to US then, much cheaper.

Expensive rego is just a revenue raiser. You get more money from those that can afford to register their cars and you also get even more money from those that don't with unreg fines etc and keep the police busy while there isn't any other crimes to attend.

    • Damn revenue raisers. I guess I'm going to have to get stiffed and pay up.

  • ACT registration includes ctp insurance.

    • QLD does as well as its only about $700/year

      • $368 in VIC. It includes CTP and registration. However, I get it a bit cheaper because I'm a classified as an oldy.

      • that's for 4 bangers.

        try V8 mateeee~ !!!

    • VOC rego includes ctp as well. The rego depends on the suburb you are in vic. My car's rego us up for renewal this week and is about $900.

No such thing as ctp in Vic. And the rego does not change from suburb to suburb. Regional rego is cheaper than Melbourne rego. But apart from those two errors, you are completely correct……

Buy a car with WA rego, it's the only state that doesn't require yearly inspection. So you never need to go to the local mechanic or local MVR, for a Ford Falcon was $183 for 3 months, cheaper for longer periods and smaller cars.

ACT doesn't need a yearly either. only if you're transferring rego and its older than 6 years.

And OP is moving to ACT luckily

    • Qld doesn't require yearly inspections

Luckily for OP he is not moving to QLD.

      Victoria doesn't require yearly inspections.

    • WA recently introduced a new payment for serious injury insurance regos are over $700 a year now up from around $300.

WA Rego doesn't need a pink slip or RWC for old cars or when you change owner, for this reason is the only one that allow to live in a different state.

    • Except when you get pulled over by the cops and get fined for not transferring your rego to your current state within the correct time. IIRC its a similar fine to driving unreg

  • NSW is only marginally cheaper, I pay around 1.1k.

    • And requires yearly inspections for cars over five years old

and the yearly inspection IMO are a good thing. It doesn't cost much ($35ish) and doesn't take long to get it done, but I'm sure it helps repairs some things that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

  • NSW:

    Approx. $500 for rego
    Approx. $1200 for CTP

Rego due in a few months, sad times.
