Anyone Successfully Placed Bids to Get Business Class Upgrades with Malaysian before?

Hey,

I am flying PER - KUL - HKG, HKG - KUL, KUL - PER with Malaysian.

I am thinking about bidding on a business class upgrade on the 2 longer flights between PER and KUL. The minimum bid is $250.

Has anyone done this before?

When do I find out if my bid is successful? Can I change my bid if its not?

Is Malaysian Business class worth it?

Thanks!

If that happens Ill be going down in luxury at Citibanks expense.

      Win-Win situation.

  • Don't have much info to help you, except that I tried bidding the lowest before and didn't get it.

If I had to guess, they just pick the highest bids to fill business class until they run out of business seats.

Highest bid wins? What? No freaking way!

I haven't flown MH in a while, but there is a thread on FlyerTalk documenting successful bids.

You'll find out if your bid is successful. KUL-PER is $480 and $727 return currently for most dates. There's a good chance that you may be able to re-book the KUL-PER segment in business (pay the change fee and fare difference) and have a confirmed business seat. IMHO, KUL-PER is quite a short flight compared to the east coast, and I usually won't even think about paying additional for business, unless you need the additional luggage allowance.

The PER - KUL segment in Business is $479. I paid $660 for the whole booking and I think there is a $100 change fee so I don't know if that would work. I am surprised that its that cheap, its a lot more expensive on the segment from Perth. I think Ill bid $15 above minimum, the flight is short but the times suck so it'd be nice to get the bed.

It's probably not worthwhile paying the change fee since your ticket price is really cheap (even with a stopover). MH does most of their deals ex-KUL and sometimes ex-BKI. The Golden Lounge in KUL isn't bad, but it isn't the best. Hope you win the upgrade bid!

        • Do you know if I would get access to the lounge as an arriving business passenger on the way over? I'm not going to try and upgrade the next flight (KUL - HKG) so I would be economy for that one. Thanks for your help.

        • @daveaus: I haven't tried, but you should be able to for international connections. YMMV, though; MH is in cost-cutting mode, so I can't say if policies have changed.

  • We tried a couple weeks ago but no luck. One attempt they said you could have 2 out of 4 seats but we declined.
