Cathay Pacific Boeing 777 SYD-LHR with 4 Hour Layover in HK

Hey Guys,

Flying out to Europe next Wednesday for a nice trip to see my gf in the UK and then travel Europe in the summer with her.

Quick question all my flights are on the Boeing 777 aircraft (77W) and I'm roughly 6 1", what seat in Economy would you suggest? Seat guru is somewhat not so helpful this time round.

Just wondering if anyone has flown this aircraft for long haul, I've got a 4 hour layover in HK and I'm considering a lounge pass but not sure if I should just sit around HK airport and save the $100 lounge pass for something to spend in Europe.

Keen to hear any suggestions

HK airport is huge. Just hang out. Look around.

  • Did that exact flight last year, except we only had a 1.5 hour stop in HK. HK is a big airport, plenty to do, but we did pay the $40 for one of those DragonPass access to a private lounge. I don't know about you, but when you are flying for nearly a whole day, I want a nice hot shower in the middle.

And I'm 5'11", and I had no problems with the Cathay seats. Just sit over the wing if you don't like turbulence.

go grab some popeyes chicken in HK airport, also if you fly next week all the best seats have gone.

Do you realise most chickens have much less than an economy seat their entire life?

A whole life in less than economy. Think about it!

  • Wander around HK airport - it's huge and lots to see!

Had you been with your gf, I'd say that you're better off spending $100 on the lounge pass - otherwise your gf could easily spend more than $100 on shopping! haha

  • Definitely an aisle so your legs can go somewhere. Perhaps ask at the airport about a exit row seat.

I am 6'3" - there's no magic seat on any plane that will allow you to be comfortable. If you can spend a little more to guarantee an exit row seat, or at least a bulkhead (which won't recline into you) then they're your best options.

In economy you just have to accept that you're going to be uncomfortable - there's no way out of it.

A 4 hour layover is nothing, you may arrive late and remember you'll probably be boarding the next flight 30-45 minutes before you take off again.

Oh - another thing. The first thing you should do when you reach your seat is empty the pocket in front of you of all the crappy magazines - chuck em in the overhead locker. Will give your knees an extra bit of space.

  • HKG airport is still rated third best in the world after 15+ years, lots of bars, restaurants and shops to explore airside but buying a lounge pass better.

  • Thanks for all the tips and suggestions guys, I'll see what available when I check in to the flight and hope for a nice seat

    • do not be surprised if that 4 hour turns into 6, have flown this route to Manchester from Melbourne twice before on CATHAY and the 4 hours always ends up being 6, both there and return legs.

      • So I should buy the lounge pass then :)

  • Seats are seats. Get sleeping pills and you won't know the difference haha. I was just in hkg airport for about 4 hours and we filled it up by just wandering around looking at shops. Don't need a pass, but if you think youd be better off for it then do it.
