Getting Started as an Angel Investor

I've been kicking around with the idea of getting into the startup market via angel investment, but don't have an idea of how to start. Is anyone on ozbargain familiar with that market, and willing to give tips on how to get started? Particularly in Sydney?

And just to cover this off:

  • Yes, I'm aware it's risky.
  • No, I wouldn't put more money in than I'm willing to lose.
  • Probably up to $50k investment at this point.
  • I have a financial modelling and risk management skillset so can provide skills and cash.
  • Yes, I'm about are that ETFs exist and that it is a good investment option.
  • No, I don't want to invest in real estate instead.
  • No, I don't want to give it to @altomic. Or bikies.

add $30k more. buy $80k car. bam. high yielding investment.

just be aware. as an angel investor be prepared to go backwards a few time (lose money) before finding the right investment that at least break even. even rarer makes you money.

but hey. you could be funding something innovative and or groundbreaking. a game chager if want to call it that.

Damn it. Knew I'd forgotten about the $80k car investment option.

And as such, the claim in original post that you have have financial modeling and risk skills is therefore up for debate

Yes it's an excellent investment, not just nuclear power, especially if your single, helps pay off the mortgage 2x as fast Mr Burns.

          Mr Burns?

No, my name is Mr… Snrub. And I come from… Uh… Someplace far, far away.

          …yes, that will do.

  • I see angelList https://angel.co/ mentioned infrequently, I haven't looked further into it since I hardly qualify for such things

  • Depends on the area you want to invest in, but if you're thinking tech, maybe reach out to hobbyist groups? See if anyone's working on anything interesting. Depends which round of financing you're aiming to get into

  • Two things to consider:

    • I have a financial modelling and risk management skillset so can provide skills
      Not needed

    • $50k is probably not worthwhile.

If you could explain more, that would be helpful.

Hi Mr.Snrub I say you invest that money back in the nuclear plant.

Mr Burns asking for financial advice?

There's a few startup incubators around, and I know of one in Sydney where they take the startups through business plans, marketing, scaling, company structure, pitching, etc. They have a session of entrepreneurs pitch to selected angel investors - some get picked and others don't.

Maybe try those. Let me know if you want me to put you in touch with them.

    • That would be great if you could give me the details. Thanks!
