    I'm assuming it the old version without the clip. Waiting for the 2017 version.

    It never ceases to amaze me how much people are willing to pay for torches. Torches without easily-removable batteries that will probably be landfill within a few years due to cell deterioration and unwillingness of the average customer to have it replaced.

    Comes in a thumb-sized body…

    Hmm. https://gloimg.gearbest.com/gb/pdm-product-pic/Electronic/20…
    I guess that's down to one's own interpretations.

      So what's an alternative that you recommend?

      • So what's an alternative that you recommend?

        Paying far less. Using a more standard torch. Using a headlamp. Buying one of the many cheap models and clones. If you absolutely needed this type of product, sure. Go ahead. But if you want power, you can buy sooooo much more for this money.

        Utilizes Cree XP-G2 S3 LED ( TIP ), packing max 360Lm while maintaining compact body

        Going for lumens and beam distance in a torch this size is a bit dumb because most won't use it this way. If you use it this way, go ahead. Pay for it.

        If you wanted a product similar size to this there is, this was posted recently: https://www.zapals.com/group-buy-product-nitecore-t-series-t… and countless other cheaper options. Of course they are not exactly the same…but I'd argue for most people they don't have to be.

        If I were shopping for myself, I'd never buy a torch without a battery that can't quickly be swapped out. And I'd prefer a headlamp 99% of the time anyway. Of course a headlamp is not this small. And if I wanted power and durability (metal shell) I'd buy many of the 3AAA/18650 focusable torches on ebay with full metal shells, for under $7.

        If I wanted a conmpact long-lasting torch, I'd buy a 1xAAA torch from one of the many manufacturers, again far less than this. Easily removable battery. Long life, low lumens.

        • That single AAA option, is never in regulation as the LEDs are 3v, and your battery will sag when its voltage is jumped up to the right voltage.

          I use a Trustfire mini001, but its heavy in the pocket. I have a couple of lightweight 16340s too.

          Hmmz, thanks for the advice, but it doesn't seem like any of them are true alternatives since they all have shortcomings in either weight/size or brightness.

          @Tuba:
          I got one of these fenix e01 AAA jobs for free with an order. I still think it's a rip-off when buying from one of the 'better' China brands at 'retail' prices. These things are not rocket science. Weights:
          eneloop AAA: 11.7g
          fenix e01: 13.5g (no battery inserted)
          total with battery inserted: ~25.2g

          Thicker than this, but far less wide. Can easily be put on keychain. That serves as my compact. Very long battery life but low lumens and no different modes: just off or on. I'd argue most would be fine with these limitations. For others, the niche needs, I'm sure the manufacturers are making a nice mark-up on models such as this.

          It still surprises me how much people are willing to pay, despite the fact that this does fulfil some users needs for sure.

        • @Tuba: I'm not quite sure what you mean here by "in regulation". You can boost a single AAA to 3V without issue, it just won't put out a lot of current. Still fairly useful though as a compact light.

          You won't find many lights that run on a single AAA cell that comes close to 300lms. There's only one that I know of - the Surefire Titan Plus.

        • @3: Simple maths, to boost 1.5v to 3v, you halve the amps the battery can supply. It will go into voltage sag almost if not, immediately, that is wont be able to boost to 3v. Its the problem with single nimh battery lights. I have a few AA and AAA singles.

          I agree at $40 its exxy, but at $25 Id own one. I paid $17 or so for the Trustfire mini. You could probably drive a truck over it though.

          Why would you assume that no-one would use a small light for it's brightness?
          I have a 500Lm light in my bag that's about the same size. The brightness can easily light up a room and can also be used blind someone temporarily.

          You're putting words in my mouth now. I said "most people". And I gave my opinion of the value of these things, both from a longevity standpoint (embedded battery) and cost. Like any product, I'm sure some users need it / want it. But of course pay the price. I still regard torches as simple devices.

          haha if I wanted to put words in your mouth, I would've quoted you like this:

          Going for lumens and beam distance in a torch this size is a bit dumb

          I'm just saying there's nothing wrong with a small powerful light. You're implying that a cheap 1xAAA light is better than this one and can be bought for cheaper - but they're really two different things.

          @bobbified:

          I'm just saying there's nothing wrong with a small powerful light.

          And I agree, for a niche of users. Who are willing to pay these higher prices. For most, it is a bit dumb. I'd argue that they are satisfied with 'quick light' for a short time that can be depended on over the longer-term (storage, etc.), and don't need mad lumens.

          Especially in a compact.

          @cheepwun:

          There's a coolness factor in these little gadgets too! haha

        • +1

          @Fiximol: or longevity for that matter. If you buy 5 cheap zoomies, 4 might still work after a week, 3 after a month, and you might be lucky if 1 works after a year. Granted they are only $7, but then the landfill argument kicks in. Not to mention the hideous colour temp, low output with a AAA cell, and lack of a really low mode like the Tip

          Personally, I wouldn't buy this as the colour temp is too cool for the price, and I'd spend a bit more and grab the Tip CRI. Or save some money and just get a Tube for 1/3 the price, or one of the Astrolux keychain lights with the Nichia 219b emitters for about the same price as the Tip (I have one and it's nice if you prefer a twisty).

          Dude.. Its a high quality lithium battery. U can charge it over 500 times and it will still stay strong. How long do u think it would take to charge 500 times?? once a week… Thats about a decade worth of use! So it dosent matter that u cant swapout the battery. The torch will be long dead or broken by then anyway. So your solution to "extend" the decade long use of this torch is to give examples of shitty quality inferior torches that can easily break but have the option to change out the battery… Lol.. Ive had 2 of these for about a year now and they are amazing but the second a 2018 sligly brigher one comes out these 2 are going in the bin… Thats how it works… I imagine you wont buy a new phone with a fixed battery also because it wont last longer than 5 years lol. Welcome to the future.

          @ego2spare:

          shitty quality inferior torches that can easily break but have the option to change out the battery… Lol..

          None of the metal-bodied cheap torches I have from China have broken….none. From the 18650 zoomable models to the AAA models.

          Thats about a decade worth of use! So it dosent matter that u cant swapout the battery.

          good luck getting any of these embedded-battery devices to last 10 years and still have a decent charge in them. Lithiums don't like to be discharged too low. Nor charged too high. And deteriorate rapidly in heat. They like about half-charge for storage purposes. Going to extremes reduces their life. Lucky to get a few hundred cycles in a product like this. Probably hit landfill well before then. And no instant battery swaps either. And the battery just works in the torch, not elsewhere. It's over 25 bucks. I think money can be better spent elsewhere, but your opinion may differ. There is a niche that wants this product. I think it's fair to say I'm not part of that niche.

        • +1

          @cheepwun:
          I actually agree with a lot of what you say. I own several nitecore torches and whilst I am a big fan of their products, I consider their greatest flaw as too bright.

          Yes there are adjustable settings, I have that too, but the lower settings is usually too bright in tricky situations. In heavy fog, anything above 1 lumen from a pin point source usually makes things worse, combine that we reflection from the water and it becomes useless.

          For general home and garage usage, I suggest a lamp format like any of the lipstick looking lamps. Lumens are over rated as your eyes adapt well to lower lighting. Brighter lights can also make things darker as glare constricts the pupil. Dim lighting also draws less power.

          So overall, this product on offer fills a very small niche - cool gadget - and it does it well.

    • +2

      Show me, as light weight, as flat for the pocket, no charger required just a cable, and as bright in one unit? Ill wait. Next model hopefully will have USB C so no extra cable if your phone takes C.

      But Id like to know if its the earlier one that discharged, or the improved version. IIRC, that xmas model were all improved versions, and it was easy to tell with that unit. The rest is not so easy.

      • Bought one from previous sale with no clip so old model I think but had no battery drain issue with lockout

  • Okay, I'm just about to bite the bullet but can someone tell me whether this is the old version that discharged quickly or the new version?

    • its the new version. FWIW I ordered one from gbest on the 3rd july and received the 2017 model (yes i paid for express delivery). That said, I wouldn't guarantee that's the model you will get - Banggood for instance, specifically advertises its the 2017 model - Gbest doesn't).

  • this thing is crap…bought 3x from the last deal, they're all died within 2 weeks…and took forever too to arrive

    if u buy this…you'd probably get it when there are 2 newer versions out already lol

  • How can you tell if it's the old model or new model? What are the differences?

    • at the bottom of the page theres a Q&A - states that its the new version.

      • Sorry, I couldn't find the Q&A. Is it under reviews?

        • my bad - if you look at the top of the page just under the title - theres a score of 4.9, to the right of that "19 customer reviews" and to the right of that "2 answered questions". Click on that - its the second answered question

        • +2

          It's actually unclear whether it's the old or new version. It doesn't specify.

  • +2

    The last review is showing the new version, but before that all are older one. Likely new version but it's not guaranteed, especially with this price

    Great light Great price! I just lost mine a few days ago and have been very sad until now :)

  • I have jumped on this and ordered a TIP but would also love a deal on the Nitecore NU30 which is a USB rechargeable headlamp. I find when camping or outdoors its handy having a torch that you can attach a lanyard to or put in your pocket and then a headlamp with a low and high mode you can leave on. Yes this is my first post - I was happy in the past to just read other comments however in this instance no one had mentioned the NU30.

    • +1

      I am also waiting for a good price on the NU30, however, since my phone is usb-c, would like all charging standards to be usb-c. A lot of items will also be using USB C moving forward.

      Reduces the number of cables needed to use with a power bank.

    Great torch to carry on your keyring. At max brightness, you can blind someone at night if they sneak up to you in a dark area. I use it so that I can open my front door at night and to look around the car if I drop something down the side of the seat.

  • Mine was delivered today (paid $3 for faster shipping and tracking). I ordered the grey version and recieved the 2017 model with the clip. Thanks for the great deal OP.

  • I just realized mine says still processing. WTH?

  • Mine seems to have fluctuating brightness. It is subtle but it is definitely occurring.

    I also have two of the Christmas ones (Red-Green) that don't have any fluctuation.

    This suggests to me that mine is a dud, or that it is non-genuine, using PWM or somesuch.

    So, if you're thinking of buying this from Gearbest … I suggest you don't.

  • +1

    Mine arrived earlier in the week it is a 2017 model.

    The light is great. I have attached a lanyard to it and will use it for camping ect. The clip means it can also work as a headlamp using a hat.
