Good Floor Standing Speakers for Music/Home Theatre

Hi!

Recently purchased my first AV receiver, got the Yamaha RX-V781

The quick specs are:
7.2CH
- 95 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.06 % THD, 2 ch driven)
- 160 W per channel (4 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9 % THD, 1 ch driven)
- 160 W per channel (8 ohms, 1kHz, 10% THD, 1ch driven)

I am now looking for some decent speakers (think BMW/Audi level, not Bentley or Lada) to go with it. 50%/50% music listening and movie watching. I don't really need the full surround… I am thinking it's better to start with the front two and a centre channel, and perhaps a sub if the front two lack a bit of the lower end.

I was looking at these Klipsch RP-280F for example, but it doesn't seem like a good deal at $2299, considering they sell for US$860 (~AU$1100) on Amazon.

I know speakers should be "auditioned" and that everybody's tastes are different, but I think I can't go wrong with a reputable brand and have to start somewhere, and some suggestions/pointers would be appreciated. Also you deal hunters can be pretty amazing at finding good value, so need your help :E

  • Elac Debut F6

Speakers are generally marked up about 100% over cost, so bargain hard. You should get them for about $1300 a pair.

  • 2 other options:

    Beng

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Beng-v7b-ma-4-Wege-HiFi-Columns-S…

    Pioneer

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pioneer-SP-PFS52-Floorstanding-Sp…

The Pioneers are considered by many to be outstanding value for money. Sure Pioneer doesn't carry the brand weight of Richter, but these SP-PFS52 speakers have won many value awards.

  • do also consider Jensen speakers

  • Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be looking into these. If anything else crops up, please let me know.
    Cheers.

  • For that price point its hard to beat the JBL Studio 580. Suggest you read the reviews.

  • Have you visited any HiFi stores for demo of speakers?
    This will help you decide.

    • Yeah, went to a VideoPro near me.. didn't really see any deals. That's why I usually buy online from overseas, but that's a little difficult with 20kg/each speakers :D

      • Did you ask them for a better price? Usually they just quote the rrp unless you are ready to buy it. I have seen prices dropping 20-30% easily. Ex demo / floor stock also usually have good deals.
