Optus mobile early cancellation fees

Hi all OZBargainers,

I thought there was a law passed last year that optus/telstra cannot charge any cancellation fees anymore, is that still true? I am on a 12 month contract and still have 9 months left but I wanted to cancel it early they advised me that I have to pay an early cancellation fee of $108. I brought my own phone, this is a sim only plan. Any thoughts and advice on how to get out of this would be appreciated.

I could be wrong here but I don't think any law was past, I think what you are thinking of is when on a contract with a phone included you can cancel the contract and you only need to pay off the remaining cost of the phone at their determined price. I think this was only implemented by a few providers including telstra and optus.

I would be very surprised if a law was passed banning these cancellation fees. You entered into a contract and now want to break that contract, it is only fair that you have to pay them money to do so.

    No

  • Early cancellation fees would have been spelled out in the contract you signed.
