Gym Membership - Wanting to Put on Hold Longer than Time Frame Per Contract

Fractured my foot almost 3 months ago, still in the process of healing. I will have to use crutches until late Aug, which is when I will have my screws removed. After that I can begin partial weight bearing.

I have put my gym membership on hold; per my contract I can put it on hold for a maximum of 18 weeks, which is up in a few weeks time. I have contacted my gym to see if I can extend it for another few weeks and of course they have said no.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully extended the amount of time they were able to put their membership on hold?

Side note: while on hold I am paying $7.50/week as admin fee and the total time my membership is on hold will be added to the length of my contract.

I have successfully extended by getting a letter or certificate from doctor that I was unfit to exercise during the period, give that a shot.

  • Ouch, guess you have a perfect reason to skip leg day

In seriousness, depends on the gym and their policy but most should if you can provide supporting evidence from doctors and such. Read the terms and conditions of the contact and find out.

    • Contract was pretty succinct in that aspect, maximum freeze period is 18 weeks. No mention of what happens if you have a medical condition.

How much is your contract ? Also that admin fee to keep it on hold sounds like a scam. My local gym is $399 a year, at that admin fee, its basically the same cost.

    • Yea I know,, approx $30+ a week. I never thought I'd have to put it on hold when I signed up for a 1 year contract.

$30 a week?? Do they have gold plates or machines? I pay half of that…

  • Sounds like FF.

Write a note to Mr Branson!

If they don't want to come to the party (with a Drs note) perhaps contact Fair Trading etc in your local state.

Go in and ask to see management.
Once they see you in crutches they might give you some good will.

Go in! If you're just dealing with them on the phone or via email then you could easily be telling porkies but if you actually SHOW them the situation then they might change their mind.
