Looking at Buying iPhone 6s

Hi guys, I've been looking at getting an iPhone 6s for a family member. I've checked out a few websites including online stores, ozbargain, Kogan, Gumtree and eBay.

I then saw the eBay deal below and it appears to be the best price for a 16GB one. $519 listed but $493 with 5% off. How reliable are these guys? Any other suggestion for 16GB or 64GB or 128GB?

I just got myself a new iPhone online, I don't think 16Gb is enough, as my old iPhone 5 wasn't satisfied with 32Gb, highly suggest to buy a larger storage as you may regret later. Moreover, be aware that some eBay sellers selling refurbished iPhone with NOT original package.

“BRAND NEW cosmetic condition & 100% Fully Functional in NEW SEALED BOX after strict remanufacturing process. All of our phones are fully backed by our 12 MONTH Australia-wide REPLACEMENT warranty and have been activated earlier for testing purpose. All Phones come with generic accessories included (charger, earphone, USB cable and SIM PIN). You need to contact us for any warranty claim instead of the manufacturer . This is as new condition & not factory brand new sealed unit. Actual battery life may vary depending on usage patterns, installed apps and phone settings. We may ship your item directly from our international warehouse. Please feel free to email us if you are not sure.”

Yeah I'm not convinced, even if they had sold 218. Definitely not brand new, but they refurbished it….whatever that means. Accessories are fake ones/generic ones. Warranty is through them not apple.

    • Only as new, have been activated, Actual battery life may vary <—- definitely a refurbished iPhone. My frd worked in phone shop, he has some iPhone materials on hand to fix. Maybe not an original battery or monitor, you never know.

  • Thanks guys. Gumtree seems to have a lot more options and I will keep looking.

  • Hi, does your family member really need an iPhone? I mean there are better value phones out there that offer better bang for buck.

Yes iPhone's are nice they look good, but they are more of a fashion accessory, an expensive one at that.
Many people 'kids' especially must have an Apple product in order to fit in with the cool kids, they can be very demanding about what they want kids these days, if it is a kid say you'll pay part of the iPhone, but they'll have to earn the rest, there is a price for the big name brand tech and kids have to learn that money doesn't grow on trees, of course if it's a retiree then an opportunity iPhone can make sense as they can be more easier to use than Android's.

There's also apples locked down ecosystem.

If the phone is for a much younger person they won't have much money and most apps aren't free, even quite expensive for an app, but there's is quality over quantity compared to Android.

I'm a software developer in my 30's and my preference is the iPhone. We all have our own tastes.

      • I muck around with a bit of code to, so I prefer android, being more open and all.
Yeah it defiantly is a personal choice.

        Cheers :)

That can actually be beneficial for people who are technically challenged. My mum for example has no idea about computers or smartphones and when I gave her my old iPhone it was a massive learning curve for her. She mainly uses it to call relatives overseas and the camera, but at least she cannot screw it up and fall for malicious apps/websites since being locked down also helps with security a lot. Also the simple interface of just icons makes it easier for her to use.

Apple has family sharing for all family members part of the group - each user can have their separate account. Purchases likes apps, movies, songs etc are shared across everyone and no extra billing. Organiser can take charge of the purchases and requests. Handy to manage your kids, or like me manage my mothers iPhone purchases. I don't know if Google has this.

I'm a power user in IT and my preference is the iPhone - better support for software updates for new added features and fixes, even for older devices (iPhone 5S will get the near coming iOS 11 updates but not all features and that device came out in 2013). I do enjoy Android's openness, but these days, security is a huge issue.

Androids too fragmented, but this is mostly the manufacturers fault, not Google's.

      • but at least she cannot screw it up and fall for malicious apps/websites since being locked down also helps with security a lot.

Yeah, I definitely agree there that older people benefit from the locked ecosystem.
There's a lot a lot off places out there to get "free" stuff for Android, and it also comes with other free nasties.

Hm, interesting I did not know that, I believe Google has recently introduced a similar concept.

        better support for software updates

Yeah, but the more later updates are made to slow down the device, to force you to upgrade.

My dislikes for apple, is for always having a locked propriety ecosystem, they have a monopoly, though now there PC's and laptops use the x86, they are just regular PC's now with a chip that Apples OS searches for.

Apple is expensive cause of there ecosystem.

Though the one thing that I really liked about apple, was when it refused to help the FBI break in to the terrorist iPhone (I don't want to get caught up in the politics of this anyone), this is about privacy and privacy matters, I don't want mine or any government accessing my phone reading my text messages listening in on my phone calls, I don't want to live under a surveillance state.
Apple stood up, OK maybe it just wanted to gain some popularity, publicity and be know as the good corporation, but it still stood up, and this even made me consider getting an iPhone!

What I don't like about Google is they just harvest every ounce of my data, my personal identity.

  • 16gb is nothing

    my phone:

    Messages - 2gb (I could clear I guess)
    Snapchat - 1.05gb
    Podcasts - 1gb
    Netflix - 3.44gb
    Google Drive - 3.14gb
    Facebook - 500mb
    Instagram - 500mb
    Messenger - 320mb

so add all that up and plus the IOS and there is pretty much no room left. I mean you can pretend you wont take photos and will delete stuff but hey the 64gb+ is a way better option.

    Facebook - 500mb

Remember when a 1MB program was massive?

    • One of my favorite game's is a dos 1992 space invaders Galacta The Battle for Saturn, think it's about 140KB.

  • How did we end up talking about DOS and floppy disk? I don't want to overclock my phone's CPU lol.

Can someone please suggest where I could be getting a reasonably priced iPhone 6s? 16 or 64 or 128.
