Recommendation for Split System Air Conditioner

Hi All,

We live in an apartment with balcony on the 2nd floor and planning to get a new air conditioner installed (split system).
We plan to get one for each room and also one in the living room. Can you recommend a reasonably quiet and efficient brand and model number and where to source it from?

At the moment we are considering between Fujitsu and Daikin but open to any others currently on the market.

Is it cheaper and/or possible to source ourselves and then get it installed OR just get the installer to supply and install for us?

Thank you.

Mitsubishi heavy industries, ask the installer his price (for both supply and install) then ring around. Also look at units with two indoor heads which will work from the one outdoor unit to save space on the balcony.

    • Recommend Mitsubishi (as 3rd option)
found Daikin are more generally a lot more expensive by a good margin
could not justify the extra cost with the price tag as its not something we are constantly using all the time

from personal experience found it easier/better to deal with installer who sells you the unit too (you get quotes/responses in a more timely manner) rather than saving a few bucks on the unit by buying from normal retailer like Goodguys who would use a 3rd party installer or finding your own 3rd party installer

Daikin warranty is the same as everyone else these days, and some Daikin units are lemons! So you're paying a prem price for not a lot.

MHIA is different to Mitsubishi Elec BTW. Both are good units.

    • dual head splits can be great space savers, but are really no cheaper and if the outside unit drops dead, its a replacement of everything = $$$$$

So if you have the room, get a split for each room if you have SPACE.

      • Good to know, we do have the space and were planning to have one unit per room.

  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Daikin are the best imo.

  • Most of the providers also provide installation services. Generally 1 of those 3 are recommended. It would generally be cheaper buying and installing from the same place as usually is cheaper and with things like air-conditioning if something does go wrong you can just call up the one place rather than determining (or trying to determine) if the fault is from the aircon or the installation guys or having them both point the fault at each other. The product providers who install really know their products and know re installation issues with circuit breakers (if required), loading, noise, etc.

My folks had a Fujitsu and the arse rusted out of the compressor after about 6-7 yrs of use. The installer was surprised but also not. Nothing could be done to save it.

They replaced it with a Mitsubishi Elec unit. SO far, very happy with it.

    • The aircon installer we have found, is pushing for Fujitsu, so its good to get some insight into other units available. I was told by a friend that each installer pushes for one brand or another depending on what commission they get. Can anyone confirm this?

This is correct. They normally get kickbacks aka commission or reduced rates on units if they move a certain amount of that brand. So they normally push a certain unit, as they make higher profits. As they move lots of these units, they normally know them well too.

That said, it doesn't mean they are BAD units. I'm just reporting my folks outcome of their Fujitsu unit. They hadn't been happy that it failed so young, but had been happy with its performance while they had it.

They went Mitsubishi Elec for a few reasons, mostly for winter performance in frosts that the Fujitsu suffered a bit in that the ME unit doesn't.

ie Mitsubishi Elec has diamond dealers etc.

  • I assume you own the apartment? And have owners corp approval to get this installed?

    • We have notified strata of our intentions and just need to fill in a form for approval. But all the spec details and model are required, hence this research phase.

Because of the obvious potential for confusion, it's important to note that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (https://www.mhiaa.com.au/index.php/component/mitsubishi/prod…), whose split system aircon units have topped Choice comparos in the past and are also recommended by several posters above, is NOT the same company as Mitsubishi Electric, also mentioned (and linked) above.

    • Thanks for clarifying.
