Fake "you're today's winner" message

Recently, when I tapped on a bargain on the OzBargain home page (it was this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319916), I was immediately redirected to a fake "you're today's lucky visitor" page.

I've only seen this once, on OzBargain, and I haven't been able to reproduce the issue again.

Has anyone else seen this? I'm wondering if it's on my end. This is my work phone and their security software (zIPS) says that everything is fine with my phone, I still don't doubt that something strange on my end could cause it. It's a non-rooted Android phone with not many apps on it.

Is Ozbargain using a third party ad network that can inject JavaScript?

I reckon you should get a prize for that hat mate.

Ha, my photo on here is from when I signed up (2009), I should probably change it eventually.

  • Actually I reverted back to Stock Firmware on my Nexus 5X a little while ago and without much 3rd-party Apps, and updated to the latest security stack…. and yes, I also got similar popup and redirecting ads. Its very annoying and is forcing me to root the device, get SuperSU on there (for protection), delete the official Chrome Browser and install a third-party. It's quite disconcerting, since I know the avalanche of malware that is out there for Android… its even making me think iPhone.

        Incorrect.

      • This is just a basic webpage though… Nothing's stopping the exact same thing from happening on an iPhone. In fact Android is better since you can root it and install additional protection.

Given most people can hardly remember their passwords Android is very weird. Definitely only common because it’s on cheap phones.

IMO would be far better being locked down like iOS with an advanced option to then enable customisations. Even simple stuff like every message app keeps asking “should I be the default messenger” and takes over the SMS app. Skype takes over phone app as well. Annoying (again most users are not IT savvy hence why they get tied up with issues like this).

Not to mention laundry list of permissions when you install apps etc…

Unless OZB was compromised it’d be your phone or network.

      • Not to mention laundry list of permissions when you install apps etc…

Most apps ask for permissions as-needed now, rather than all upfront.

Unless OZB was compromised it’d be your phone or network.

Yeah I'm wondering about the possibility of the network injecting something malicious. I'm currently in the USA using AT&T.

Maybe you tapped twice and the second tap went to an ad on Gearbest?

    • That's possible. Alternatively maybe I accidentally tapped on the ad on the OzBargain page and it went to this page?
