Utilities Via Credit Card

Paying for utilities, (water corp/electricity/gas) I have normally been using direct debit BPay. I wanted to use the credit card to maximise points and make up the minimum spend to get the bonus points on a new card.
All 3 utilities have a credit card surcharge.
How do ozbagainers pay for utilities to maximise the points?
Pay the surcharge? (0.5%)
How does it calculate when using velocity/Qantas points?

Thanks in advance.

    I have most of mine direct debit my credit card without a surcharge. I did have one, can't remember, that had their payments classed as cash advances which was only introduced last year.

  • Telstra use to let you paypal without a fee…

    It really depends who the utility provider is … each has different rules.

    • Water corp, synergy, Alinta gas.

      • There's another thread about ATO payments to maximise points … check that out. It should work for utilities.

  • You can search for biller at bpay.com.au. If the biller accepts credit card payment method, you can pay using your credit card through BPAY and you won't be charge any fees.

    • They all have BPay, normally pay from my everyday account, was looking to use credit card….?
      (Points vs card surcharge)

      • It depends on how a biller has set up BPAY. If the biller BPAY setup accepts credit card, making a BPAY payment through your credit card won't incur any fees. Otherwise, most credit cards treat BPAY payment as cash advance.

        By searching for your biller on BPAY, you can find whether the biller allows credit card to be used for BPAY. Hope this clarifies.

  • Post Billpay.

    If your Utility provider allows it, pay via Post Billpay using PayPal which is linked to your Credit Card.

  • If you are using CBA, no points for bpay transaction;
