Best Place to Get Cake in Sydney CBD

Hey there

I am looking at getting a Birthday Cake from a shop in Sydney CBD for a birthday dinner. I am not familiar with most of the shops there and am looking for a cake that feeds about 14 people and at a reasonable price.

Could anyone who has bought cakes before, please suggest some nice places to get cake. Has to be in Sydney CBD and not a fan of cheesecakes.

Thanks in advance

Did a double take, thought the title said "Best Place to Get Coke in Sydney CBD".

To be on topic though, Freddo Ice cream cake!

    • I agree, Freddo Ice cream cake can't be beaten…

    • So do you know the answer to the first question? haha :D

  • Mezzapica in Leichhardt, hands down. Second would be Papas in Haberfield

+1 for Papa's in Haberfield. I think it's about $40 for a cake that can serve ~14 people and they're excellent.

Any suggestions on what is good from Papa's?

        • +2

Just about anything - their cheesecakes are great. Cake page is here: http://ppapa.com.au/classic-cake-range/

Not everything may be in stock ready to go so may be best to call ahead otherwise you might only get to choose from the display window.

          @cyssero:

          Thanks mate!

Will definitely give it a try.

        • The ricotta cheesecake!

  • make the cake go further with ice cream

there's a blackstar pastry in town hall … google watermelon cake if you're unfamiliar with it,

The Cheesecake Shop is one of the best.
But looks like there's none in the CBD, unless you want a quick train ride:

      "One of the best"

      Facepalm

      Then

      Chuckles

      • +1

One of the best for variety at a decent size and price.

What do you expect, a happy ending with each cake?

        • You try Papa's or Black Star Pastry first. I guarantee you The Cheese Cake shop will drop to bottom rank in your list. And I promise you will get your happy ending & good night sleep. :P

There is another nice cake/cafe shop at Lidcombe called The Smelly Cheesecake, run by the Koreans. I know it's not near CBD. Their Matcha cheesecakes are beautiful. Too bad no large/bday size cake, but you could get 2 or 3.

If you're after cheap and can pick up from Auburn, Costco- https://costco.com.au/MV/CakeOrders.shtml

Otherwise, Zumbo cakes always seem to impress a crowd and have a few CBD pick up options - http://zumbo.com.au/product-category/large-cakes/

Baked cheesecakes are disgusting, real cheesecakes are amazing. Only cake I eat. Except for ice-cream cake, of course.

  • 88 degrees, near world tower but a bit expensive, cakes are nice though.

I think you mean 85 degrees

    http://ppapa.com.au/

    • There is a Chris' off Oxford street in Surry Hills that is walking distance to Central. Their greek pastries are phenomenal, but I haven't had their cakes.

Have a look at this place: https://larenaissance.com.au/

They have a shop in The Rocks and their cakes are awesome.

    • I'm a fan!! Was about to suggest this place. :)

I like Jillian's Cakery which is not far walk from Central.

      their red velvet is awesome

  • If you can make the commute - Kurtosh in Surry Hills - expensive (based on my standards) but the cakes are good and a little unique. Worth a visit for the coffee alone.

Zumbo from QVB or the Star might be worth looking at. You may have to pre-order to secure a large cake that serves 14 people.

  • Reasonable price is subjective. You could at least state the budget?

    Woolies mudcake : $4
    Choc fingers: $2.50
    Maltesers 250g:$5.00

Stick the fingers on the edge of the cake, cover the top with maltesers. Nobody will know it's from woolies.

They will think it came from the 80s (Australian Women's Weekly) instead.

https://www.oldoakpatisserie.com.au/ at Wynayrd-Met Centre have nice cakes at ok prices

If you have a bit more in terms of budget you can actually order birthday cakes from Steel Bar on Carrington Street. My work place orders from here and the cakes are usually pretty impressive.

I'd avoid any chinese bakeries as the cakes dont have much substance and usually just full of fake cream.

    • +1

agreed most cakes from chinese bakeries are basically just glorified spongecakes plus cream.

  • Lorraine's Patisserie- my favourite is their flourless chocolate cake but that's not exactly cheap.

Just realised that it's gluten free hence the price tag?

    FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE $9 (gf)
    whole: serves 4 - $24, 8 - $55, 10 - $75, 12 - $90, 25 - $175, 36 - $252
    Light, moist Valrhona choc cake

Shop 5, Palings Lane, 320 George St Sydney NSW 2000 - next to the entrance for ivy nightclub at angel place.

  • I highly recommend the St Honore caramel cake at Miles & Co in The Galleries. $62 for the large one. You have to order it a day before you pick up though.

Lower Ground floor. Trust me on this one.

  • The BEST chocolate mudcake I have ever bought in Sydney was made in a factory in Bondi. The street runs at 90 degrees to the main road just past the Bondi hotel turn left and its about 300 metres along from the corner. They supplied a coffee shop years ago at Haymarket near the UTS during the 1980's. Moist, fluffy, rich , mud cake, most likely CHOCOLATE GANACHE the creme la creme of cakes. You haven't tried a cake until you have tried a caramel or chocolate " GANACHE " its pricey because its loaded with Belgian Chocolate so expect to pay TOP DOLLAR for this treat of treats. I am Hungry now . Whats that street's name it's a popular side street.

  • Sorry ….. I think it doesnt exist anymore TRY CAKE BIZ for a fantastic CARAMEL GANACHE about 55 bucks but you will you be licking your chops off after one piece. You can buy a single piece …… just ask them CAKE BIZ ….. they make cake as good as Michelle's top range.
