Leaving Car Over Night Halfway Between Work and Home

I am sure some Ozbargainers have done this.

My wife and I work in two separate places, both 10km or so from the end of the common path, she drives east I drive south etc.
The first 40km of the commute is the same. Is it possible to leave one car permanently Mon-Thu overnight in a street in order to save fuel.

The only thing i can think of being a problem, is letting the insurance company know where the car is parked overnight, and explaining the plan, but I doubt they would understand.

how much do you value your hubcaps?

      Well played

  • Ditch one of the cars (sell it).
Your SO drives you to the drop-off point, shits you out of the car, and continues to work.
You catch an Uber for the remaining 11km.

    • That won't save any money. A 10km Uber will be $15-$20 each way.

      • It might. Depends on the daily cost of:
        - Petrol
        - Maintenance
        - Rego ($2 / day)
        - Insurance
        - Parking
        - Depreciation of the car
        - Factor in interest earned having the cash from sale of the car chillin in a term deposit.
        - Using the time in the Uber to browse ozbargain on a smartphone and save even more money.

Will also help if you cycle through Uber and Gocatch accounts (phone number and cc number) with referral/new customer bonuses.

Haha I like some of your reasoning. My mate recently weighted up the pros and cons of buying a car and calculated that it cost around $6000/year to buy one (doesn't include parking costs), which is about $120/week.

Say your Uber is $30 round trip each day, that's $150/week. You could potentially be better off doing it this way, however I think OP can save more money if they ride their bike from the split point, or even just alternate dropping each other off.

@ilikeradiohead: This savings will be prominent if theres more than one passenger. Say 3 colleagues around the area sharing the same trip to work

As someone whose car has been broken into during daylight hours, parked in a parking garage servicing the police station and courthouse in Melbourne CBD, I would not advice anyone leaving their cars on the street overnight.

I had to bear the excess and the inconvenience of sending my car to and from the panel shop (door had to be replaced) and all the electronics took months to sort out as the thieves tried to pry the door open.

  • P45 seems like a good option.

  • Get a job at the same place

  • ditch both cars. share an uber to work. tag on 2 other colleagues at the same time along the path. share the cost between everyone.

  • In the dead of night, excavate your workplaces and move them closer to home.

  • Throw a bike in your car. You bike the last few kms while wife drives away.

  • Do both of you have secure parking overnight at your workplace?

Drive together to the workplace with the second car stored, one person jumps out and the other one drives to work.

Then whoever finishes work first drives to pick up the other?

    A bit more flexibility

  • Alternatively, schedule an uber or taxi daily from the split off point. Maybe get lifts every now and again
