Anyone Having Problems with The Xiaomi Wi-Fi Extender? [SOLVED]

Got the deal from Zapals the other week and it just turned up. The procedure is to plug it in to a USB, download and login (sigh) to the Mi Home app (on the mobile phone) in order to configure the extender and hey-presto! So did all all that and the app sees the extender no problem but it wont detect my routers wifi (Asus RT-N66U) the wifi is working fine and in fact the phone is connected to it and working but for some reason Mi Home wont detect it. Not sure if it's relevant but I run an open network as we are on a block with no neighbours or other people around who can pinch bandwidth.

Any ideas appreciated.
Cheers.

(edit: Working now, it would not connect to the open wifi, once I turned security on it started working.)

  • Glad your problem's fixed! I'm expecting this soon and really need to get rid of a Wifi deadzone at home.

    How's it working for you?

    • Yeah used it today and it seemed OK. Just used it to boost the signal downstairs but didn't do any rigorous testing.

  • where do you live?

    • What are you wearing?

  • I went to whirlpool to get technical knowledge about extending my WiFi signal. Hell, all they said was to plug into modem with Ethernet cable and give up on WiFi. So is this really working? and why did you have to use your mobile to connect to Mi Home app, was it necessary or could you have used a laptop or other computer?

    • Not sure, You need the Mi Home app to configure the extender then you 'should' be able to remove it afterwards. Not sure how you'd do it otherwise. All I wanted it for was to stream Pandora whilst downstairs and it works fine for that. Haven't tested it for anything else so YMMV but for 7 bux it's no great loss. I wasn't going to spend $100 on a ubiquiti wi-fi extender. :)
