Declared Import GST Value on Price Protection Items?

Hey guys,
How does declared GST work with something that you're getting a refund on via price protection if it drops it to below the $1K limit? Would you just declare the invoice GST and then make a claim for the refund of customs import duty with the documentation that you're getting the refund?

  • Is it even worth it?
And no, you can't do that.

    • Why wouldn't it be worth it? GST is expensive; apparently we're just too lazy to get deals here now?

      126(1)(fa)
The price of the goods, used in determining the customs value, had a rebate, or other decrease which was not taken into account in determining the customs value

      Would this not be applicable?

      • It probably isn't applicable.

Your credit card's price protection insurance is different to a rebate from the supplier. It's a contract between you and the insurer, not the supplier. The payout has no connection with the supply nor does it decrease the price of the goods.

Did you bother to ask the Department of Immigration and Border Protection? There's even a 'refunds questions' enquiry email address at the bottom of the page you linked.

  • Try your luck and let us know how you get on.
