Recommend a laptop for Light gaming at $500 or less

Hi guys,

am not very knowledgeable with computers so would appreciate some advice.

Have the following requirements:

SSD - no need for HDD.

Capable of playing League of Legends, from light research many in built graphics are more than a capable of running low end games like league. The intel HD 620 seems like a good one?

13" or smaller

Not bulky, don't want one with a built in GPU or anything of the sorts as it'll still be used occasionally on the go for web browsing/email/office.

More than happy to buy second hand/refurb.

Is the under $500 price point realistic for the above requirements?
Can you please suggest some listings? The cheaper the better.

Thanks in advance!

    An idea
Bite the bullet and spend $760 on the Lenovo (including cash rewards)

Might save you some dicking around

I've only had trouble with Intel graphics

    • Which Lenovo?

      • E470 the deal

        • At 1.87 kg, 14" and 800+ unfortunately doesn't hit the needs I require.

          Thanks anyway

        • @Big Bad Bagheera: you'd be stretched to find one with graphics for a better price
          Lemme know how you go

        • @science-teacher: In the OP he wrote

don't want one with a built in GPU or anything of the sorts

So I don't think he really wants one for gaming.

For that price i'd probably say just keep an eye on the Dell Outlet.

DFO-F2NQ3F2IP looks okay for the price

@Agret: he literally asked for one for gaming

          To which I replied

I've only had trouble with Intel graphics

          And posed him an option

I too can read the post. We were discussing an option that he hadnt previously mentioned with information (my opinion) that he didn't have before.

          Cheers

    • It's a business laptop, not a gaming laptop. Not really meant for handling video games on it, just only for productivity.

A NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2gb will handle medium games just fine
It will definitely handle what he wants to play better than integrated

For $500 pretty much your only option is finding something second hand.

  • There's this antique NOS Acer Travelmate 8371 for $259. Win7 Pro too.

You'd just swap the HDD for one of the many SSD deals posted here. If you had change from that, double the memory too.

If you're inclined, I'd first message seller to clarify discrepancies between label pic and the auction description (optical drive etc).

    Edit
Something a bit newer with faster CPU, 128GB SSD and 4GB
    Refurb 11.6" Acer Travelmate

Quite a few possible candidates on eBay.

    • The second one looks quite promising.

I'm a bit confused about the On board graphics they list for it.
It's listed simply as 'Intel HD graphics' most other ones I've seen have been followed by a model number, e.b Intel HD 620

      • The newer one has 64mb integrated.

        Graphics adapter
Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail), Core: 313-854 MHz

"Therefore, older and less demanding Windows games like World of Warcraft or Half-Life 2 can be played fluently in very low settings. Performance is not sufficient for most modern titles."

Their test unit had a lower spec CPU (N2930) but even the linked one is a general purpose thing. You should squeak by with it.

Puts things into perspective vs low-end i3 from the same era (2013).

You might find some decent laptop around $500 that can play light games on eBay or Gumtree. There's not a big range of light gaming laptops around 13'', or with an SSD. If you want a laptop like that they probably won't have a decent graphic card, that's under $500.

    • Defitnely don't want a 'gaming' laptop just one with a decent enough inbuilt GPU to run low end games, mainly LoL

      • As what puncake said, you can find the laptop that you need on either gumtree or ebay.

You can find a laptop with 930M for $500 or less in gumtree. It is enough for light gaming and also might give you 40-60 fps in low settings, probably more.

Better get a little graphic card for gaming, moreover a game with a lot of saltiness ;)

  • i will def stick with Lenovo. good quality, affordable, not bad for gaming
