Need Advice on Personal Alarms

I am needing to find out about personal alarms… for my aged mother who lives alone. She has just left hospital / transitional care and they were not able to advise her about this. If you have a family member who has one or you know about how they work and what is the cost (mum is a pensioner) please comment below. ☺ many thanks

  • I know someone who has one and I think the cost is about $35/month through one of these agents http://www.tunstallhealthcare.com.au/about/agents

  • Thank you

  • Are these the loud alarms you press when you're in distress?

If she's old, the ear piercing loudness of those things will startle her and may give her a heart attack. Be sure to test them out first.

    • No. They are personal alarms usually for old people where they can push it and it will automatically send an alarm to a monitoring centre and they'll call you to check what happened.

If they can't get onto you they'll also contact a emergency contact to go and check on the person with the alarm. If that person isn't readable then they'll usually call the ambos so make sure she has insurance.

The cost is around $40 a month. Maybe less if you are on a pension. The issue with these alarms is the range isn't that good… If you mum likes gardening for example the box /receiver for the alarm may need to be somewhere where the signal will go outside. The company will be able to advise about this. I'm not sure if there are booster boxes available but I'm guessing there would be options.

Another possible option /addition could be a Apple Watch with a cheap iPhone to carry when she goes out of the house (if she goes for a walk etc). It has a feature where you can squeeze both buttons and either ring emergency services or an emergency contact. Of course this depends how much she can use technology.

      • I see. Never heard of them till now.

iPhone and iWatch might be beyond an old lady methinks. It comes with the added responsibility of remembering to recharge them daily which she probably won't remember to do.

  • something like an autodialer alarm button thing - like this thing from aliexpress for ~$100

    • Looks like that uses 2G gsm which doesn't exist.

I'd say the monitoring solutions are worth it as they'll handle it if you are overseas or something.

      • something like that but 3G/4G

  • Yeh it uses 3g or 4g network. And yes a mobile phone probably wont do it as she woukd not have it with her ALL the time…
