Cheapest option to insulate a floor? Rug/Mat?

I just moved into a new room which has bare tiling and its pretty cold in the winter, even when i wear socks. Any ideas on the cheapest options to insulate the floor? I'm renting, so I can't do anything permanent and a full carpet is probably out of the question. The room is pretty small so I don't need to cover a lot of space.

I was thinking of some kind of rug/mat but I'm not sure where to start looking or how to tell if it will be warm enough.

    • How is that cheap? a 5cm by 5cm tile costs $5…let's say 10 tiles, that's $50…

The very cheapest is newspaper! Free… Followed by a cheap rug that you won't trip on if you choose the right one. Something with thick pile or even a large memory foam bath mat will do the job well. Thickness is your friend.

      • Or just socks around the house.

      • $2 + $2 = $4 + fuel?

  • yep, newspaper. or cardboard

One carpet tile cut in half. Tie each half to each foot. Carpet moves with you!

  • A never ending game of "the floor is lava"

Try the Op shop - We got a really good pure wool rug for roughly $20 which would've been worth close to $500 when new. It had a few grease stains, which I removed with cleaner and some elbow grease, but it is really nice looking and insulates really well. It was a great find.

  • Will try the op shop, thanks.

Does anyone know anything about buying mats/rugs? Like, where are the cheapest places to get a decent one?
