Acer 2.5" Slim External Hard Disk Drive 640GB $77 at Harvey Norman (Vic)

430

Went looking for the OW Seagate 640GB $88.17 without luck, but did find the Acer mentioned in the comments.

The Acer model AH002S has a USB connection and a WD WD6400BEVT drive inside.

I asked the cashier how long they were on sale for but she didn't know, Harvey Norman Watergardens had 10 left this afternoon.

  • best value for money 2.5" portable atm if you can find one @ ur local HN.. otherwise get the 1tb seagate from online computer for $135 delivered

  • A whole $1 less than their last sale :)

I see the WD6400BEVT is 9.5mm, so this should fit in most laptops. Case is glued.
    The 1TB is probably thicker?

  • Guess I should return my unopened 640gb Seagate to Officeworks and pick this up instead…at least I know what drive is inside this one. But the Seagate enclosure looks so nice!

EDIT: Actually, what's the warranty for the Acer?

  • I would check my local HN in NSW tomorrow and see if any luck there.

      Are they open tomorrow?

      • oh, thanks for reminding me ^_^

    • HN actually open today. But the acer 640G is not on special in NSW, at least in my local store. There's an acer 750G for $115, and a samsung 640G for $98, but obviously far worse value than this.

Gosh, with so many HDD deals recently.. I really cannot decide which one to get! Sigh…

  • Dang. Bought a 500gb Lacie for $85 last week!

  • See i told people a week ago not to pay $88 for 500Gb and I got neg'd bah this specials been on and off I bought mine 2 weeks ago definetely not available at the moment at HN Norwest they wanted $129 for it Castle Hill still has alot of specials but I wasnt looking for this

  • Whoa this is really tempting, good price at a good timing since my 160GB hard drive is being exhausted pretty quickly!

Say, do you guys reckon the prices will drop further? I can wait for another month or two and plan to get a 1TB to last me for a while..

  • is it possible to price match this at another HN store?

DO they have in store catalogues or pamphlets?

  • yeah they good, but the case seems rather weak and not very protective.

Drop it once and I reckon it would shatter, no insulation around it.

  • Would this fit in a ps3? Would i be able to take out the hdd and put in a ps3? I'm a bit of a noob concerning such things.

    • Pretty sure the 640GB would.

  • I like it…..nice price

  • My local store manager just matched tt price and beat it to $75 bucks..

The only question now is that if I can swap my current HDD for that in the drive while keeping the enclosure in a working order!!

    ANyone???

    • Are you in NSW? If so could you scan and post your receipt online? Cheers.

      • Nope, I am in BNE, QLD.

        Any1 knows about this enclosure's dismantle-bility?

        How about warranty period?

        • Thanks anyway. Anyone in NSW got this HDD at similar price? Please post your receipt so we could match it.

        • Hi stalker878

What HN store you tried successfully?
          Thanks

  • Tried this at Nunawading VIC without success. They had another deal, $116 I think for the 750GB Acer 2.5", which is obviously far worse value.

    • I just tried QV and Nunawading tonight (VIC).
QV have it on "sale" for $98, tried to get them down to $77 and they knew about the deal but said it finished Monday.
Nunawading have it at the standard $130. But I just sad I saw it for $77 at Watergardens on Tuesday (liar!) and had no problems. Actually I got it for $76 because the guy misheard me. So the deal might still be good for this weekend.
If you have a chance, go for the Indian-looking guy with the Croc Dundee accent. Receipt says his name is "Krish Krishnaraja".
Edit: Forgot to say, QV had a dozen or so visible on a clearance table. Nunawading had a good 20+ locked in the cabinet.

just tried price matching at HN Hoppers Crossing, and successful. From the shelf, there are only 4 lefe, so anyone want this bargain just be quick.
Confirmed with the sales, and the warranty is 12 monthes.

Just worked at HN Moore Park NSW. told A guy I had seen it for 77 at another HN. he check his computer and said yeah ok. also said it was pretty much cost price. 77 down from rrp 129.95.

    • Could you share your receipt please?

    • Didn't think to ask for a price match. Harvey Norman Broadway is definitely $98 for the 640GB, and $128 for the 750GB!!

      • I got mine just now. This time I printed the receipt from dreamblue and choose another salesman to ask. He give me that price without any question, and I didn't get a chance to show him the receipt. The one I picked up is one of six on shelf in HN Warrawong, NSW.

        • Nope. That's a 3.5" drive. Bigger and needs a power brick.

  • Anyone know why it says 640GB, but availiable space is just 596GB? Where is the other 40GB?

    • As far as I know, hard drives have been like since forever.

eg. 1TB hard drive actually has 931GB of free space.
      160GB actually has about 140GB

I don't know what the reason is, but just do a quick google and you'd probably be able to find something about it. It's something to do with the way the units of space are converted (if I remember correctly).

      • The hard drive guys are right, and MS is wrong. There is no logical reason for using binary prefixes with hard drives.
RAM is made in binary multiples, so that makes some sense, but please call it MiB and GiB to avoid confusion.

Same with internet - your 8Mbps ADSL connection is 8x10^6 bps.

Microsoft and hard drive manufacturers define bytes different. Microsoft has 1024 bytes in a megabyte, whilst hard drive manufacturers define it as 1000 bytes to a megabyte. That difference is why you loose some space when you format it.

Just got price matched at the Brisbane City HN. Lovely young lass looked up the ozbargain site, saw the sale sticker and marked the $129.95 shelf price down to $77. As an aside, I may be in love…

      Thanks MattyD
Used your reference and the same lass happily matched the price (though need to show a printout, thanks to dreamblue)
Best of luck (I am already married otherwise you have to face a challenger)

  • Great! I've just grabbed one from HN Chadstone. The guy there was so nice, he agreed to sell at $77.

    • Yeah got it from there too! Staff said it was a catalogue sale or something. It was already in their system. So bought 2 without any problems.. Thanks OP! There are still quite a few units left at the Chadstone branch.

Bought one from HN @ homemaker center in Valley, Brisbane just at lunch.
They still have a box full of these about 20+ but aren't marked down.
Cashier didn't know about the deal, but I spoke to a guy named John in the computer department which gave me the discount.

  • Anybody had any luck with Garden City Brisbane, or just the city. Thanks.

    • I think some1 did.. look above..

    • I went to Garden city today, best they did was 99,,,

  • Thanks just got one from HN in Melbourne CBD, there were plenty of them left. The sale price was $90something but the guy had no problem price matching at all. Got it for $77.

  • Anyone had any luck in SA?
BTW just wondering OW stock Acer?

  • HN cannington have plenty on stock, the 640gb for $124 and the 750gb one hidden in the shelf on special for $119

    no luck in price matching

  • 640GB? Not bad

  • +1

No luck price matching at HN in Melbourne CBD, but at least 50 units sitting in a clearance bin (for around $119). The guys serving me insisted that the deal had finished yesterday, and refused to do the price match. I asked them to call Watergardens to check, which they did, and the answer was that the deal definitely finished yesterday. So worth calling ahead to avoid wasting time, and probably not a good idea to use Watergardens as the store to price match against. Great price though - thanks OP!

I was in HN in brisbane city this morning, tried to price match, one of the guy said the sale was end yesterday, but then I tried to talk to another guy and he had no problem with $77 , so I still got the sale price. So maybe just try few different people who serve you.

    • I agree with you, asking different salesmen gives you better chance. As you got yours today, maybe your receipt with the date can be a new proof for price match. :)

  • I went to 2 VIC stores (Highpoint and Sunshine) but they wouldn't match the price. They said the deal is off already and the best they could do is for for 99A$. I give it a miss.

  • still selling $129 at HN in hoppers crossing.that is no good.all stores should have the same price whether you are in SA or NSW or VIC.

    • It's at that price because the sale is over.. If you had gone on sat, you could have gotten it at $77/78.

  • just got HN moorabbin down to $87 from a simple call to chadstone who confirmed it ended on the 5th but the man was nice enough to go to $87….!! WOO!
