When Do Airlines Release Flight Specials for January?

Hi all,

I know I am asking the worlds dumbest travel question but, do airlines release sales fares for Jan flights around Sept/Oct? I know it's peak time but was wondering if airlines put any sale fares out to fill seats.

I can only go away in January school holidays ( son starting high school) and am looking for decent fares to organise a family trip for a family of 6.

Thanks in advance

There are rarely "specials" in Jan because they are school holidays.

Though it does depend on when exactly you want to go and where.

  • I'm interested as well but I'm planning a trip in late Jan after peak has finished. I can get BNE-LAX return for $1059 direct on Virgin or $810 via Fiji so tossing up whether to book now or wait for better pricing

those prices are reasonable for that time of the year. you might get $50-$100 cheaper but if you already have your best dates picked out then, personnally, I'd bite the bullet and buy now to guarantee having tickets.

      • Yeah I think I agree, so am probably going to pull the trigger tomorrow. Tho I notice the flight's gone down to $1013 actually! Hmm

Jetstar do their Japan specials for early next year every September

  • "special" fares for the public are, fly before 12th dec or after 28th of Jan……in between those days are "special" fairs for airliners to recover whole year's expenses.

  • There were cheap flights less than a month ago from Qantas and others. They were from Jan 17.

I would hold out and just keep checking sites like Iwantthatflight with dates from Jan 17. I'm sure you should be able to jag flights to LA for less than $1,100 at this time, say returning Jan 26 and later.

  • Yeah your best chances during peak times are as early as possible. I had to fly to Perth from Melbourne over christmas once - I booked it well in advance, not on sale and I could clearly see that all days around that time were the same price as nobody had begun to book yet. I paid about $400 return which I was happy with for Christmas…

Your other option (if its domestic at least) is to wait until the last minute. I had to book a flight within 3 days of departure at the start of Jan and it was cheaper than if I had of booked it in advance..

  • Not in my experience. In fact some airlines do the reverse. Even if they have seats they put the prices up closer to flight date.
If you were considering AirAsia for January, then I would say 14 or so months before when they are having one of their regular large sales. (Other than when they have these sales you cannot book 14 months in advance)
