Is It Possible to Find a Cheap Phone of Decent Quality in Australia?

Hello Ozbargainers!

I'm out of luck, me trusty old HTC m9 has all but breathed its last breath! I've resorted to using an old nokia as HTC Customer care told me i can't have my UK phone repaired here. Among other reasons, the nokia just doesn't cut it as i don't have anything to browse when i'm sitting on the bog - one can only play snake for so long before losing the will to live.

I'm a backpacker so i don't have 1000$ to shell out on a new phone but i would like to get something decent, relatively new with a good camera and preferably android.

I need to know your opinions on what phone to get? whether it be used or new, what carrier, where to get for cheap, should i buy using contract or not? I've read the comments on the mobile deals and a lot of you guys seem to know what you're talking about when it comes to mobiles!

Max price willing to spend up front maybe $600, but if you know about a good deal with contract i'd love to hear!

Hope this reaches all my fellow thrifters out there because i'm in dire need of help! thanks in advance!

Oppo F1s is decent phone at a decent price. Often ~$200 @ BigW

    • I've never heard of oppo before but that looks like a great little phone for the price! - $259 at the moment in BigW. Also there's a lenovo zuk2 on ozbargain at the moment, costs a little more. I'm torn…

    look on gumtree.com.au

    .
    should i buy using contract

Would they even allow you to? Considering you're not staying for the duration of the contract, unless you pay it full- which would most likely be >$600

First off… You said you're a backpacker. Unless you stay for 2 years it's unlikely a contract is the best thing to do.

I'd be buying from a shop not online.

    Sony Xperia XZ?

    • I am planning to stay for 2 years but I've already been here 3 months so maybe a contract is out of the question! :/ Never thought of buying a sony before but it really looks like they've stepped their game up with that phone!

      In english-
"Here you can buy an S7 32Gb for just under $680"

      • Translation appreciated

        • Would have provided exact details but was on my phone. The S7 for only a little more or the XZ would be my choice.

I wouldn't go for a contract. Just in case you have to leave early. Go for a month to month service and then just cancel it when you leave.

  • Thanks for the replies; now i've got options! I think in my price range, it's between the Xperia XZ, Oppo F1 or the lenovo Zuk2.

I'd love to know what phone you would go for…

    • Nextbit Robin goes for about 170.

  • JB Hifi Nokia6 or something
