Halp, My Chinadroid Is Drowning Me with Spam!

Gday fellas,

The recent Bluboo deal got my thinking perhaps i should ask for some assistance from OzB since i know you guys are a tech-savvy lot.

I made a comment on that deal which i will copy+paste here:

Bluboo owner here

Don't have this specific model but ive had a few chinadroids over the years and the bluboo i currently use is by far the worst. It overheats and barely runs even in cold temperature (particularly after charging) and the GPS is quite bad. Also it is loaded with adware that i haven't been able to bypass. I can't even remove base apps off this phone (unlike the doogees i owned in the past) so just be warned as far as chinadroids go and the recent xiaomi deals, you would prolly be better with one of those (in fact i might go for one of the xiaomis)

The main issue i have with this phone is the intrusive adware.
The ads are like so:
https://ibb.co/d1cOaQ

Sometimes i even get ads on top of ads just for daring to open Gmail so it's abjectly obtrusive.

Now, on the recent Xiaomi deals i noticed a lot of talk about ROMS and MIUIs and things - i dont know what this means or how to install/use them, also i don't want to root my phone as i play pokemon go and i understand rooted phones get banned so basically does anyone have any advice on what to do about this?

I have tried factory reset and blocking all updates - which works for a couple weeks then the ads seem to start again so any advice would be welcome.
This is the specific phone in question:

Thanks all !

Might be worth having a look in the XDA forums, they probably have a debloat guide. Or worst case you flash a custom ROM.

You will need to root your phone. and then install a custom recover image (TWRP)

This phone is not popular. There is no decent ROM for it, the only Cyanogen based one is not working and has a sound bug (no sound).

If you know what process is causing the ads, you can use Greenify or Titanium Backup to freeze or even remove the process.

To be honest though, I wouldn't even consider using the phone anymore once it is rooted, as there are a lot of security risks and exploits on your device and the root access just opens you up to a lot of different attacks.

You should buy a Xiaomi or a Motorola series and at least it will have regular security updates.

    • Why you remove "off topic" my reply warn user not use phone and steal email \ detail. And say same thing ?

  • Okies thanks for the replies guys. Can i ask do the Xioamis come with adware too - so is it a case of all chinadroids need to be rooted to function normally? Cos as i said i was looking for a non-root solution just cos i dont want to get banned from poke-go (i really only use my phone for gmail and poke-go tbh)

Generally speaking, no. Some vendors preload malware, and it can be easy to detect. For e.g Xiaomi phones won't do OTA upgrades if the ROM it's using is a 3rd party one, and you can also check to see if the bootloader is unlocked or not.

Xiaomi's new devices all have locked bootloaders. Which makes it slightly harder for sellers to preload their own cooked ROM, but if they are determined, they will. You'd just have to buy from a trusted seller and cross your fingers you don't get bad one, but if you do, it's usually not very difficult to get a stock MIUI ROM from the Xiaomi forums and flash it yourself. Root not required for this.

Blueboo in your case, doesn't even have a trustworthy stock ROM image to begin with. That's why it's not advised to buy dodgy brands.

so is it a case of all chinadroids need to be rooted

As per above, you would root a phone if you want to get rid of adware yourself, or need to flash a custom ROM to get rid of a ROM that somebody else has polluted with adware.

      • thanks heaps for that info, scrimshaw, i do appreciate it. i think i will get a xiaomi from that recent deal which i believe still lasts another day or two and hopefully that one is much better

        cheers !
