It's been a while since Shave Rave has done a deal, but we're back and ready to drop some discounts for you!

Many of you probably are aware of a site called www.shaveshed.com.au, it's long been one of the main providers of wet shaving equipment in Australia. Some time ago, they announced their closure. Shave Rave has acquired control over the website and it now re-directs to www.shaverave.com.au. This is extremely exciting news as it will also allow us to stock extra products and brands. Shortly Cella, Parker, Feather, Derby and Gillette will be joining the store, so there will be more deals to come as they launch!

This merge has united two brands that historically have aimed to deliver more competitive pricing on luxury shaving goods.

To celebrate, we are offering 18% off the entire store for orders over $40. For orders under $40, we are offering 15% off. Try a safety razor for the first time, stock up on grooming products, the more you buy… the more you save!

For orders over $40, use the code: ShaveRaveMerge18 to receive 18% off.

For orders under $40, use the code: ShaveRaveMerge15 to receive 15% off.

As always, Shave Rave has a generous loyalty system, sign up for an account and you'll automatically accumulate points. These points can be traded for discounts for your future purchases.

Hope everyone has been well.

  • Any deals on a good super badger?

  • Almost all the merkur safety razors are out of stock, any idea when new stock will arrive?

    • Arriving on Friday.

  • +1

OP - a section on your web site describing the differences between 'open' and 'closed' combs, with some close-up photos showing detail, would be really helpful. For a newbie like myself it can be a bit confusing deciding which is best for my skin. Otherwise, this looks like a great deal.

    • Hey, excellent idea. We do have an article on picking/using a safety razor but I think it has been buried deep into the past.

      To answer your question though.

If you have thin facial hair, sensitive skin, prone to razor rash etc… closed comb is for you.

If you have aggressive growth and feel like you get stubble within a few hours of shaving, then a open comb will give you the closest shave.

That said, even an open comb probably won't irritate your skin as badly as a cartridge. But if skin really is an issue, closed comb is always the way to go.

      Hope that helps.

    • Start with closed, you will get less nicks.

  • This comment has nothing to do with shaverave; I've purchased from them before and had a great experience….

However, I did try to purchase some shaving soap with a bowl from from shaveshed during the clearance sale and all I got was the refill… no bowl, ignoring the fact it was a clearance sale that was some very expensive shaving soap.

Message to ozbargainers; beware of online going-out-of-business clearance sales, even those
    from regular contributors.

But… Shaverave is great. Keep up the good work!

    • Thank you, appreciate it.

  • How long is this sale going for ?
Id like to make a purchase but want to wait until the combs are back in stock

    • Until Friday.

      What combs are you after?

  • Looking for a DE handle with a bit of heft to it. Dont like the lightweight ones. What would be a recommendation?

    • The Muhle Grande Series is what you're after.

Light growth with sensitive skin: Muhle R89 Grande.

Heavy growth, coarse hair: Muhle R41 Grande will sort you!

      Hope that helps.

      • Thanks for that. Is the R41 Grande the 2013- version?

  • I am also looking for a safety razor to get started again. Used to have 1 a few years ago and would like to go back to safety razors now. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    • If you've used on before and confident you won't cut yourself. Then you should be alright to try almost anything. Really comes down to skin type. Our best selling razor is the Muhle R89 because it's easy to use, hard to cut yourself and built like a tank. That said, if you have a course growth, you may not find it strong enough.

For anyone who has a decent strong growth. You'll want an open comb like the R41.

      • Thanks for your response. I think I will go ahead with the R89. Are there any differences between R89 and the R89 Grande really?

        • Yes, the cutting head is identical. However the grande is heavier by quite a bit. It's a weight difference and thicker handle. Does improve control and smoothness.

        • @ShaveRave: Grande it is then. Thanks mate.

Perfect timing, I need some more saving soap/cream and some new blades.

    • Enjoy!

  • I have the Philips 1250x rotary but it takes me about 15 mins to shave because it just doesn't catch all the hairs (have to go over manually after with the built-in trimmer). I've also tried the standard Gillette Proglide 4 blade cartridges and while much faster/cleaner it gives me bad razor burn and breakouts.

I've heard safety razors might be the way to go. Could you recommend a basic solution for the sensitive-skinned, impatient gentleman?

    • +1

You sound like a perfect candidate for a safety razor.

I'm much the same, prone to irritation.

I would recommend the Muhle R89 safety razor with Muhle aloe Vera shaving cream. It's by far the best shaving cream for sensitive skin that I've ever used.

      • Cool, thanks for that. Might give it a shot. Is a brush recommended too or not really necessary for starting out with something simple? Also, how long do the blades generally last?

        • +1

Yep brush is recommended as well. I have found the boar brushes to work fine. They just take a little longer to break in but after that cant tell the difference. Blades depend on your face but I find I can usually get 5-6 shaves from mine so at 22c a pop makes them pretty cheap.

Just to add and Boar brushes tend to be considerably cheaper. I have the Omega brush

        • @SirNed: Thanks for the tip :)

          http://www.tryablade.com

Maybe worth it if you aren't sure on blade you like, they offer hundreds, I personally like shark stainless blades at about 10cent was by the 100.

          Feathers are also very good.

  • ShaveRave, I have a very coarse beard and oily skin. Currently using cartridges but want to give a Safety Razor a go. Can you recommend something to start off? Complete beginner to DE Razors. if it helps, even a trained barber with a straight edge can't get a completely smooth shave, and I've been to many many barbers (its a hobby, I enjoy the experience). Any tips?

    • Cut up your cheeks as scar tissue doesn't grow hair. Lol

    • Hey there, You're going to need an open comb for sure! Sounds like you'll need an aggressive razor to keep your growth at bay a little longer. The Muhle R41 is your safest best https://www.shaverave.com.au/collections/safety-razors/produ…. A solid performer with an aggressive edge…. Now you are a beginner and open combs can be a little more harder to tame… but it doesn't take most people more than 2 shaves to get the hang of it… Try it on a Friday and you'll be competent by Monday.

Now, for your skin, I would say Proraso red would be the best option for you. Proraso Red is better suited to those with a course growth https://www.shaverave.com.au/collections/proraso/products/pr…, it softens the hair up a bit more than your average shaving cream. It contains Shea Butter and Sandalwood oil, both of which are awesome for moisturising your skin and should help the oiliness or at least give you a few hours relief.

      Hope that helps!

      • Thanks for the great reply and wonderful customer service!

  • Hi ShaveRave,

I like keeping some facial hair and shave around the edges every couple of days to keep it looking sharp.

I hate (with a passion) using supermarket razors (like Schick and Gillette) and always screw up my beard lining. I've tried all the cheap razors and the expensive behind the counter types and hate them all.

    Barber shaves are always perfect.

I previously used an open comb safety razor - was my dad's - but cut myself terribly. It was when I first started shaving.

Any recommendations to those of us who like o keep some facial hair and need to keep the lining trimmed to look neat and sharp?

Cheers and Good Luck with your business expansion.

    • Hey,

I hate them all too! Haven't used on in years. I used to use them when I travelled and that only reminded me how awful they are. Considering they're actually cheaper to use, I can't believe that cartridge razors rule the world… but that's the power of marketing for you.

Hmm what open comb razor was it? They do take some getting used too, but even then it's rare that you completely slice yourself up. Some older razors have a lot more blade exposure. Even the Muhle's were updated in the early 2010's to reduce the amount of exposed blade… it decreases the amount of damage you can do.

I'll give you two different recommendations…

Recommendation 1 (ideal): Use something like a Muhle R89 or R89 Grande (hard to cut yourself with it) for your general shaving, and use something like the Bluebeards Revenge Shavette to do the lining. Using a shavette requires a steady hand, but gives the ideal result in terms of control and precision.

Recommendation 2: Stick with a safety razor like the Muhle R89 and use it for your general shaving and attempt to do the lining with it to the best of your ability. After your shave, use a electric trimmer to do the precision lining work.

Some people (myself included) after a while get pretty good with the safety razors, I can actually do some pretty precise lining work with it now.. but it takes a little effort to get used to. Worth it in the end. Sure you need to work a little harder at first, but in the end… you'll get things done twice as fast and at a fraction of the price.
