Which Anti-Virus Programs Should I Install?

Been looking online for solutions to malware for my pc, its fine for now but sooner or later they will come for me. Here's some of the things mentioned online. Spybot, eset, Kaspersky, Windows Defender. It is free. AVG, Norton, Avira Anti Virus.

Seen a lot of suggestions online but i don't know how i feel about trusting complete internet strangers, so that's why I've come to Ozbargain.

I also already installed Malwarebytes, it seems most people on the internet recommend it.

Ozbargain = less complete internet strangers?

There's plenty of websites that do proper tests on them, why can't you trust them?

Personally I use AVG mainly. Run spybot and malwarebytes every now and then.

    • idk i feel safe here. mostly just want opinions mainly.
Do you have spybot and malwarebytes installed? I bought Malwarebytes premium, that should be enough?

    • Indeed, AVG is quite nice. However, they seem to push their own DNS, which causes issues for my system from time to time. Malwarebytes might not be as better than Windows Defender with Windows 10 tho. It got quite good recently.

I've used a few over the years and personally I've leaned towards Avira Antivirus. It just seems less intensive than the others. Just stay away from Norton.

    • There is nothing wrong with Norton these days.

    • I find avira slows my computer down.

Windows Defender should be enough. I have not installed an antivirus software in ages, never had a problem. The best antivirus solution is yourself.

    Avast business. It's free 😄

  • I've had good experience with Kaspersky for some years now. It appears to do the job as advertised and appears to just run quietly in the background with very little need for attention.

  • why not the comodo internet security (it's free). It used to be quite heavy, but it runs well on my old laptop. Or bitdefender free av.

the comodo does have a few other extra tricks though (auto sandboxing, firewall)

Sophos Home, free enterprise grade anti-virus.

    • I didn't think anyone else used Sophos but it is the best by far!

Kaspersky consistently does well in the AV comparatives testing (https://www.av-comparatives.org/) and I picked up a 3 year multi-license very cheaply. I recommend it.

2017 real word protection tests: https://www.av-comparatives.org/real-world-protection-test-f…

    TL;DR these were highest rated:

    Bitdefender
    Panda
    Tencent
    Kaspersky Lab
    Symantec
    VIPRE
    Avast
    AVG
    AVIRA

  • http://home.sophos.com its free for 10 machines.

    • Thanks for this. Looks like it's only free for 3 machines now. Still good to know.

Windows defender and common sense is all you need.

Not an insult being serious common sense not to click on stupid things emails etc… is all you need.

    • Incorrect, you can be infected from just visiting a website and not carrying out any other action.

      • Ive yet to come across any such website.
I pirate a crap load (1.7TB last 31 days for torrents alone) aswell and never had any problems.
So yes common sense still plays a big roll when deciding to click on things websites whatever.

        • Agree with Axelstrife, I also do a lot of torrenting, and used to visit a lot of cracks and warez websites, ahh old times :)

If your web browser lets your computer get infected from a website it could be because it is not updated or the security has been disabled.

i think all of them to be safe

  • I have used the free AVG for years but recently it kinda turned into an ad spam bot. I just close it manually but it may annoy some people.

  • No one has recommended AVAST Yet, I'm surprised. I thought AVAST was teh go-to defender!?

  • Like some other commenters here, I spend a lot of time on torrent sites, and on cracks and warez websites in the old days.

I use Windows Security Essentials (free) and Comodo Firewall, and I also use the firewall settings in my router.

I would on average get attacked by maybe one virus in 12 months, which is always picked up and neutralised.

The firewall software and settings prevents ANY unauthorised access to my computer - I think that this is more important than the AV software you use.

I have my Outlook settings set up to prevent any downloading of images or opening of file attachments without specific permission.

I also think that your ISP spam policies are important. I'm with IINet, and they filter out spam emails extremely well - I would average maybe one a week at most.

So any AV software will do the job - but only if it's part of an overall plan, and only if you're careful which sites you visit and what links you click on.

    Bitdefender.

  • All you need is windows defender and malwarebytes (in case you end up downloading something). In all seriousness though, you don't need an antivirus. Just be smart. Always use an adblocker on your browser for starters.

  • Windows Security Essentials for Windows 7 & older, Windows Defender for Windows 8 onwards.

Also make sure you create restore points. Then if you have any issues just restore to a time before the problem occured.

Antiviruses just slow down your computer and use space.
