Japan with a Stroller

Hi all,

Just after some advice from any one who has travelled to japan with a stroller.

I have been to japan a few times, but never with my 1yo. We're going soon and wondering if we should just use a carrier or opt to bring a travel stroller like a mountain buggy nano as well. Our little one is ok to be carried in the carrier for a hour or two, but then gets a bit restless. Also we will be travelling for about 3 weeks so I think i may take a toll on our bodies.

I know that not all stations have a lift, so taking a stroller can be a pain. Im wondering how much of a pain a stroller is in Japan. I didn't really see many people using them when we were travelling there in the past.

Is it worth the inconvenience of bringing a stroller?

i've done it with one, and it was fine. The only real problem is during peak hours on the train and going up/down stairs BUT i found that they love babies anyway

We took a Mountain buggy Nano with us earlier this year without any problems (1yr old and 3yr old)
The nano was light enough to carry up any stairs if needed (though most stations had lifts).
On very crowded trains we could also fold it up if necessary.

Definitely worth it for us to have a break from babywearing for the whole trip, and it also let our 3yr old rest his legs too. I'd definitely travel with it again.

  • Japan is a really baby friendly place and people will automatically offer assistance if in need. Depending on which part of Japan you are going to, metro train stations wont be much of an issue. The smaller train stations will not have escalators or lifts so there might be a bit of a workout occasionally.

  • Definitely take the stroller. Carriers are great for hiking or (pram) inaccessible places, but its great to just have somewhere to put them down/in and not have to worry about them crawling off.

Bonus is that Japan has very good footpaths, so it should be a breeze to push your small person around. Having travelled several times overseas with our now 2 year old, we would take a stroller every time. Even in the places with pretty average pavement like Thailand, Hong Kong and parts of Taiwan the stroller was 100% worth it.

    Thanks guys.

Looks like ill be bringing one with us now.

  • It is not worth bringing a baby to Japan but if you have to, a stroller is fine.

Avoid public transport during peak hour rush, otherwise, everywhere appears as stroller accessible as Australia.

It is not worth bringing a baby to Japan

Hahaha. Can you advise places where it is worth it?

      • Very valid rhetoric.
