Advice using a Compatible / Generic Toner on HP LaserJet 1020 printer

Sometime back, I had found a HP LaserJet 1020 printer by the kerbside; a single item discarded by someone.

The toner cartridge inside was jammed, and something slightly gave way when I forced it.
However, I got it printing well again save for a single vertical unprinted line (maybe about a std. pixel wide) just off the left margin on all resulting prints. It has yielded more than 500 pages since, and seems going strong.

I have a heavy print session coming up; don't want to toner-out midway through the job.
Gotta get a new toner cartridge.

Please share your experience on using Compatible generics (around $30) in the place of a genuine HP one (upwards of $100).
And a good deal, if you know of one.

All suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

  • Evening Irate Monk,

I use hot toner to buy compatible cartridges for a LaserJet 1020 - $54.15 for 2 cartridges with free delivery.

    • Evening digitalaxon!

Can you comment on the print quality and mileage too?

      Thanks

      • Quality is comparable - it will never be the same as original HP - most of what is printed is just text documents so no grayscale printing as such and from what I can tell based on that I don't think I'd be able to tell a difference.

In terms of mileage, I generally don't track toner use in the office given the cheap price, but for the person at work who needs to print at their desk rather than our main printer I think we get around 4-5 months worth of use per cartridge - probably 15-20 pages daily at probably 3% coverage maybe?

        • Thanks for clarifying those.

          Regards.

  • I've used inkstation.com.au multiple times. Not for an HP though. I bought them for a Samsung laser printer.

Worked just fine and based on print count, lasted approximately as much as rated. I have no qualms about continuing to do so.

      Will check inkstation out…
