Is Buying Ex-Display MacBook Worth with 30% Discount?

I was offered a 30% discount on the same Macbook pro model for ex-display piece in the store.

New one costs around $3000 and same model ex-display cost around $2000. Store manager says 1 year warranty will be applicable on ex-display piece as well.

Need opinion from fellow members if 30% discount worth the time ex-display machine running and used by several customer for demo?

  • My main concern would be with battery life. You can check the battery health in "About This Mac" > "System Report".

If you intend to use this machine whilst running on battery, then check that out. If not, then there's probably not too much to worry about.

  • The machine might have been up and running continuously throughout the store opening hours ever since it was put on display (Do they power them off even at closing?)

Anyways, depending on how long the machine had been on display, the toll would have been mainly on the screen- especially if it was on Demo mode (no auto screen off when idle; full brightness)

I wouldn't worry too much about the battery holding charge; the machine would have been on charger throughout, not battery.

Heat degrades lithium batteries, so does keeping them at 100% charge.

  • I recently picked up a MBP 15" 2016 model with touch bar for 20% discount at Myer ebay sale in June. Extra 9(something%) going through TRS + 1.3% from CR. That's for a brand new model! Check the battery health as stated before and keep in mind that display models would cop a bit of abuse by careless customers. Personally i would wait for some sort of sale or buy new.

    • Wow sounds like a deal. How much did it cost you? The best deal I could find for the same one is $2592 in dwidigitalcameras dot com dot au.

Total cost after all promos etc was $2405 for spec:
MacBook Pro 15-inch with Touch Bar: 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 256GB Space Grey SKU 478674460

        • Cool..similar spec is now available for $2600 in DIWI. I am almost finalized for that one. Its just that I cant claim GST if I buy from DiWi

The display device would cost me 1740 after all discounts ( GC 8%) + GST return.

  • Does Apple have a similar system in place for damaged Macbooks?
(like they have for damaged iphones where if they can't fix it or it's too expensive to fix, you can pay a few hundred for a replacement?)

    • I was offered by one of the retailers in Sydney and this was my first encounter of this kind of option. I am not sure if Apple does the same in their store.

      • I've heard of people getting new replacement iphones for $250 from the apple store when they couldn't fix a particular problem.

If there's something similar for macbooks and the price is say, around $500 (I'm just pulling numbers out of my butt), then it'll be worth getting the display model.

        • In that case, I would be happy rather than worrying if there exists any issue which Apple Service centre can't fix it :)

Check first though - don't just take what I've said! haha
