QantasCash Negative Balance

Sorry for the long text in advance.

Currently I have -AU$5100 and US$3900 on my QantasCash account and I can’t get any resolution with QantasCash Negative Balance Team.

Below explains roughly what happened:

  1. Early May I had around AU$550 in QantasCash which I wanted to use all up. So I decided to buy digital goods (in USD) until I got a message saying insufficient funds and I couldn’t buy anymore. My thought was as this is a prepaid card I should be able to keep buying until there was nothing left in the card.

  2. When I checked balance on the Card it showed AU$0 but the amount of transaction in USD seemed to exceed what I had in the card originally. I contacted the seller who assured me all the transaction went through fine and all my digital contents were good to use. So I contacted QantasCash to find out what is going on and they tell me there is negative Balance of ~AU$5650 and they were going to get negative Balance Team to have a look.

  3. In the meanwhile I contacted the seller again to cancel some of the bigger transactions and within few days I got a refund of US$3900 in to the QantasCash account.

  4. Mid May I contact QantasCash again to find out what is happening and what do I do with this US$3900. Got told all they can do is convert this amount back into AUD as per QantasCash rates to which I said don’t convert anything unless it is same as what I paid for. Still no response from Negative Balance Team at this point.

  5. End of May I saw some extra transactions have been reversed and corresponding digital contents got removed from my account and received temporary ban on site. (That amount reserved were AU$568.51 even though AU$633.06 was what was debited initially which is around 10%). Initially I thought maybe getting a refund from seller was the wrong thing to do but seeing this made me realise if I didn’t do that I would have lost further AU$500 for nothing.

  6. Have been ringing every week to find out what is happening with negative balance.

  7. When I rang 2 weeks ago I was told there was a note from negative balance team saying they cannot give me the rate I had paid for. So I have sent an email to qantasrecoveries to explain my situation but no response so far.

I know I may be partly responsible not knowing that a Reloadable Debit Card can go to negative balance. But it just seems unfair I have to lose so much money because of stupid QantasCash rates for a transaction reversal and a refund. (I always thought for a refund/reversal you get the same amount back as what you paid for)

Overall all transactions apart from US$140 got refunded or reversed in which case I should have around AU$370 in the account. However even if I convert USD to AUD I will still end up with negative balance from what QantasCash is proposing.

I have not received any email or communication from the Negative Balance Team at all from the beginning and apparently it is not possible to contact them in any form which is making this process more difficult.

So I just want to know what my options are and what I can do to minimise my losses.

Ideally I want to be able to get back the difference of AU$633.06 - AU$568.51 and get US$3900 converted to AU$5504.80 (Which is amount debited for US$3900 worth of transactions)
Or at the minimum get the difference of AU$633.06 - AU$568.51 back as I didn’t allow reversal of transaction especially at that rate.

Edit 1: To be clear whatever I need to pay back I plan on paying back in AUD and keep the USD so I can use it to buy the digital goods again. The real problem is that I have not had any contact with Negative Balance Team even telling how much I owe exactly or whether I need to pay anything back. I actually can't see negative balance on the account so I don't know the exact amount.

How/WHY did you end up spending over $5k aud when you knew that you had around $500 on the card?

Just get them to convert it at whatever rate is going, pay the difference and move on. It's your own fault that it happened, learn from it - don't spend money you don't have

You know, sometimes you read the OP and when you finish reading you don't understand the post. Would you think what did you miss while reading but no, it is just because of people's lack of common sense towards simple things in life like spending more than the limit. Ahh well…

    • The transactions happened over couple of days and the overall pending transaction was AU$550 equivalent in USD. I thought it was a pricing error or transaction error in which case at worst transaction will be declined or money refunded. It is a prepaid card so there was no reason for me to think any different. However after couple of days the processed transaction changed to price 10 time higher

        pricing error or transaction error

Seriously who are you trying to bullshit?

You knew you over spend and when the bill finally came, you freaked out. And you didnt just over spend by a couple of dollars. You basically went on a shopping spree (10x your available cash) just because your card didnt get declined.

        • At the time I genuinely thought or at least hopeful there was price error of sort. I had planned on buying $5000+ worth of good anyway but not with QantasCash as exchange rate is horrible (At the time other cards I have didn't seem to work). Note I informed QantasCash and initiated the investigation into negative balance and to this day still have not been given a bill to pay. If they actually just told me to pay negative balance at the start or they will reverse charges I probably would have paid the whole thing to get it over and done with. Now I'm just annoyed as my digital goods account got temporary ban/warning for reversal and email/card got blacklisted from paypal equivalent service provider which the seller uses.

Don't worry I will pay the bill when/if I get it but for now I'm just exploring options or want to know how I can contact the Negative Balance Team.

OP had $550 on Qantas Cash Card, so spent $5k or so in US Dollar transactions. Transaction refunds went through, however because of differences on purchase and refund currency rates, OP may be out of pocket.

      OP claiming stupidity ignorance.

  • Is there such a team? Negative Balance Team?

    • When I contacted the Global Support they informed me the Negative Balance Team will investigate and send me an email which never happened. Been ringing for 2.5 Months and the only email I got was on 6/7 saying Negative Balance Team are still investigating and have suspended the card so it doesn't go into further negative balance. Also been told the only way to communicate with Negative Balance Team is through case log.
