Help, my 7 months of free Netflix has run out!

Yes, a first World problem. I am now addicted and paying for it, it's one thing not having Telstra Freedom Plus credit for $5, but to pay for Netflix…… What happened to the good old days? Also for those ol'Napsters, how much is your total subscription spend per month in this brave new world ?
I'm on around $45, with Netflix, Google Music, and the odd subscription I forget to cancel (I'm looking at you Audible).

How can I help? Do you want money?

The op needs help setting up a 'go fund me' campaign.

      • +3

        I'm on to it…

    • +6

Uhhhh, they made $178 million in the first quarter of this year.

        https://seekingalpha.com/article/4062909-netflix-may-never-a…

Not quite accurate, however AFAIK they're doing some wacky accounting to make things look good. Like writing off a show in 6 months time when it airs, not right now when it's being made etc.

As they push original content it'll cost tons, their upcoming liabilities are way above earnings. However short term pain for long term gain if they can make a bunch of quality shows of their own work.

When I ditched Foxtel for piracy years ago, I said I would pay for a reasonable content service.
Netflix is pretty reasonable, so I pay.
It happens that my partner wants to watch some stuff on Stan, so we have that too.
And a kid has made a 'family' with some school friends to get Spotify.
So family wide we pay about $25 a month for subscription services.

I managed to get a Netflix giftcard from a guy in Holland from Ebay that ended up getting me 12months netflix for about $70, but he doesn't have them anymore, and I haven't found an alternative cheap way.

      • +3

@mskeggs: You can make a Netflix family with three other friends and start paying less than $70 p.a.

  • -4

Try plex if you wanna stop paying for netflix

    • +3

      PLEX isn't a content provider.

      • -1

        Don't remember saying it was?

        • +5

How can you stop using Netflix with PLEX then?

        • +5

          @Rumbaar:
I was sharing the way in which "I" have done it. Getting content from elsewhere and setting it up to watch from anywhere.
Op didn't ask for another content provider, he didn't actually ask a question.
He started a discussion in which I added to in a positive manner unlike you.

        • +1

@science-teacher: So the download content and play it, via your desired media sever/player (PLEX, EMBY) is what you're saying?

        • +3

@Rumbaar: Or rip from his DVDs or whatever he wants. Just an idea for OP to cut down on his monthly expenses

        • @science-teacher: Curious how much time you spend finding content and organising it within Plex? Netflix might not have the latest content but I think have saved on time, storage and power (not having the PC running all the time) by switching to Netflix.

        • @thirdwill: don't have to have a pc running all th etime.

        • @thirdwill: I ran 5tb I got from a friend through file or and it was done
Yes I have an old decrepit laptop running it

        • @science-teacher:

          He did ask a question:

"how much is your total subscription spend per month in this brave new world ?"

        • @serpserpserp: then why would it matter whether I suggested a

          content provider

          Or not?

        • @science-teacher:

You said he didn't ask a question. He did.

        • @serpserpserp: I guess for some reason I was preoccupied with the situation at hand
          Thanks for clarifying. Appreciate it

Ever thought about going outside instead?

      Bad things happen out there.

      • +4

Yep, render distance is terrible - especially with the varying weather that still hasn't been fixed.

  • $45 a month huh.

  • +5

I am paying a $60 subscription fee to my ISP, that lets me eventually download almost anything I need - movies, music, (audio) books.

  • +2

I recently cancelled STAN and signed up with Netflix to the 4 devices plan and have split the cost with some relatives so it works out cheaper for each of us.

    • So you all use the same login details?

      • Yes you can, I share with mum and sister and they live abroad

      • +1

They would do but once it's set up you have your own user profile.

    • +1

      this!

I also do the same thing

  • A few 10TB hard drives
    Plex media server
    decent wifior Ethernet
    fast internet connection for downloading
    desktop PC

and you dont need won't Netflix and get much newer and better content

I freeload Netflix from a friend who sometimes freeloads food off me, otherwise I wouldn't have it.

Total subscription cost: 1 bowl of spaghetti a month

    • Reasonable deal if it features a nice fresh pesto sauce.

    • +2

so your friend has money for Netflix but not for food?

      • I think his friend just doesn't like cooking.

It isn't like Netflix is a $100 a month either.

        • lol I hope so, otherwise, that friend needs to re-assess his/her priorities :)

  • +1

    $14 Netflix, $12 Spotify

  • -3

people actually pay for music streaming?

    • As opposed to what?

      • Oh, I don't know, maybe something tangible like a CD or a record.

      • There are ways around paying for Spotify Premium but getting the same functionality - this is what I do. Perhaps that is what Prizm is talking about?

        • Do bands still get money from that though?

    • I wouldn't but you have to pay if you have an amazon Alexa. It's worth it

Change your payment method to Itunes, get some 20% off itunes cards and pay for Netflix with that. Effectively gives you 20% off. Not as good as free though…

    • +1

Yeh, checked it out but no Apples in the fam. Cube 8,Xioami's and some real old stuff in my fleet

      • I think you can do it from your PC inside iTunes

    • unless itunes has changed a lot in the last forty iterations, i'm under the impression it's still the devil incarnate. no?

edit; turns out forty is not spelled with a u.

    • who is doing the 20% off iTunes cards?

  • Yo no comprende Espanol amego

  • +7

I do not condone buying an android box like Beelink X2 and installing https://terrariumtv.com

  • We spend about $32 (play music family and netflix hd), but I have grandfathered freedom telstra, so I pay with that money. I also share netflix with my mum and sister so I feel I am getting good value.

  • +1

Next time Telstra $30 Kits come on sale, stock up. Can use the recharge credit to pay for Netflix via Google Play.

    For the family

$18 Netflix (4 screen plan) -> split between 4 people
$18 Spotify family plan -> split between 3 people
    $36 for family

    For myself

$28.50 Adobe Creative Cloud (student price) -> for myself
    $1.83 (office 365 student 4 year) -> for myself
$11 dropbox plus -> for myself
$5 (or something) Amazon Prime video (meaning to cancel this)
    $46.33 for myself

    ~$82.33 total

    • Just an FYI, Office 365 is $89 a year, $7.42 a month(Paid yearly), which gets you Office, and 1tb Data on the Cloud.

Else, the Office Home is $120/y, or $12 a month(Paid monthly), which gets you 5tb.

      • i have the student one :) paid $88 for 4 years

        • +1

Yes but totaled with your dropbox is >$12 a month.

      • Got a job, it's exhausting so I just crash afterwards and numb my brain…. I love haircuts though, my hairdresswr is awesome I love the free scalp massage/shampoo part

        • +2

I'm surprised no one uses Popcorntime.

It's so much better than Netflix. New movies, latest tv show episodes, subtitles in most languages, hd quality, and so many genres to choose from.

Please download it and check it out :) IT'S FREE!

    • Hmm. Whats the catch?
It says Bittorent client with integrated media player. Does that mean it is sort of torrenting?

If quality is great, I dont mind using….

      • No catch really. I've been using it for a good few years without any problems. Download is pretty easy too.

There's a few websites but this is the real website if you want https://popcorntime.sh

        All the best! :)

      • +1

The catch is Kodi is better if you want on-demand content and Plex is better if you want a library of content. The Kodi addons are better as you don't have to use BitTorrent and they have a rep of much less copyright issues. Also, the official Popcorntime 'died' years ago.

        • Yeah I use Exodus under Kodi. I did pay for Netflix for a year or so, but I got annoyed about the AU content being crap compared to US. I also found the Netflix app a bit flakey on my Nvidia Shield.

But anyway I found that we would just end up watching stuff (including latest US netflix content) via Exodus anyway. The recent Netflix price gouge sent me over the edge so I cancelled it. Arrrr ye landlubbers.

        • @stumo: Yep, I also found that Netflix was crap for the content I wanted. Doesn't matter what you pay for, especially here in one of the most established countries on Earth; there will always be an 'unofficial' solution that is cheaper and has better quality.

        • @stumo:
The only thing I found annoying was trying to find a link that plays the episode.
          Any tips for this?

  • +1

Share Netflix service with friends?… there's like 5 accounts right?

    • I'll have to follow that up and see if muster up a Netflix family.

  • P(remiumize.me) + R(arbg) = J(oy)

  • Too bad OP is not as hot as me. Being a really really good looking male stripper/hooker, I got no problem paying my Netflix subscription every month (4k one of course)

  • Subscriptions:
    Foxtel - $9.95 per month
Netflix - $13.99 per month (my 6 months free just finished so have only paid for one month)
    VPN - $5 per month
    Telstra Internet $90 p.m. (1000Gig Cable)

    Devices:
    H96Pro+ box
    Telstra TV box
    Foxtel IQ box
    Tivo
    2 * Chromecast 2
