Chasing Advice Web Hosting - Current Provider Is Dropping The Ball

Hi all

I am hoping for some advice to resolve some challenges we are facing.

We are facing numerous challanges and periods of downime via our current reseller.

We are intending to migrate the site.
Chassing recommendations for:
Who should we move our site to?
How much should we be paying?
Is there any features we should be looking for?

You don't have enough knowledge to manage yourself by what you've written, so if you know a decent local IT guy maybe have them manage along with fixing your computers and whatnot.

I'm a bit surprised none of the hosts offer this kind of service - sort of like "buy our hosting & domain, pay us $100 a year and you can then ask us questions that otherwise are out of scope".

    • Thank you for your response.

Realisticly besides some advice on what direction to head in, we just need some one to take care of the site migration, which it's looking like some of the hosting services will take care of for me.

I disagree. It's not rocket science. OP has gone with a "pay us and we'll take care of everything for you" service and it's bitten him in the ass.

First off, make sure you have full Cpanel access & passwords, and authority to move your domain. (DNS provider login & password, and domain unlocked, a copy of your "Domain Certificate of Registration" is handy to have too. Available from your DNS provider.)
Then, Find a quality host. I use VentraIP. Their customer service is great. With your old Cpanel password, they can migrate your whole site to their hosting.

Once that's complete, migrate your domain name to a DNS registrar of your choice. That way if you need to update the DNS, which you shouldn't need to, you can. (Ventra also do domain names so technically you could bring it all under the one provider.)
Then you are in complete control of your site. Don't forget to make backups, and you should be fine.

    • Thanks Draxxx
Will have a chat with VentraIP tomorrow in terms of migration.
Some what advantageous to switch to VentraIP, they include an SSL cert. May be able to resolve some challenges we have with a internal domain name (captive portal).

Sounds dodgy - are you sure you own the domain and not the designers ?

Discuss this problem directly with the new hosting provider and the domain registrar.

    • Yeah it's a far from ideal situation.
Thankfully the domain is all sweet, we have full control of it.

Planning to talk with a hosting provider tomorrow.
The challenge will be getting CPanel access to the current site ASAP..
