University - Credit for Prior Learning?

I have a bachelor degree in finance but have never really used it - I became a primary school teacher.

I recently decided I wanted to get back into this field so I applied at university to do a masters of finance. I then realised I could actually get 4 classes worth of credit for the classes I did in my undergraduate degree. However! I then received an email saying that I can only get credit for classes I did in the last 10 years… I am of course 11 years removed!

Now that I know I could have had the credit, I'm finding it really hard to get motivated to do units that if I had applied a year ago I wouldn't even have to do!

Is there by some amazing chance a university that doesn't enforce the 10 year rule?

I am pretty sure they all have the 10 year rule, unfortunately.

Long shot, but maybe ask if there's a test you can take to prove competancy?

  • Others might be more familiar with this…but are you able to claim recognition for prior learning for a masters degree in the same field as the study completed in undergraduate? Anyone work at a uni or done this?

    • Yep. Me. I am currently doing my Masters. I was given credit for my BSc because I had completed it within the 10 years.

      • Nice one, I wouldn't have been surprised if some Uni's took the stance that the undergraduate degree is a prerequisite for entry to the masters, and as such the masters is to further what's learnt in the undergrad and wouldn't have necessarily been comparable to receive prior learning cred
But if you can save on assignments and $ for units you don't need why not

        • Yeah, exactly. It is especially important when thinking about the dollars and time.

  • what did the university say when you asked them?

  • Struggling to understand why you would want to waste thousand for an expensive post grad course that you already have an undergrad for. Why not just do honors since it counts as UG still

In my uni, you can only do your honours within two years of graduating.

  • My application for credit got rejected yesterday - due to being more than 10 years.
Hard to get a job in finance when my only experience was a uni degree 11 years ago

To be fair to the university you've probably forgotten most of it. Everything will come flooding back though, you'll do well on your assignments and have even more chance of getting a job.

    • Finance is quite a broad area. Are you talking about M&A, Sales or trading?

I know someone who did a PG diploma in accounting USyd and then got into PWC audit then equities research and then DCM at a non-bulge bracket.

Maybe should look at some linkedin profile to try and see a path before blowing mad help loans

I'm confused, isn't a masters already taking into account you did an undergrad degree? Hence your ability to apply for and do a masters?

I'm nearly the opposite of you. I did a Bsc 13 years ago and now I'm studying a Masters of Teaching to become a primary school teacher :) good luck with the study

    • Thought the same lol
