Second hand Ford Territory Diesel

Hello I'm looking at getting a Ford Territory Diesel second hand in Victoria. I have about 20-25K to spend, what years should I be looking at and what issues should I be looking for with these vehicles. Many thanks.

You should be looking for one with a Ford badge and it should say "Territory" somewhere… usually on the back but also check the door jams. The diesel ones are the ones that are not petrol.

You should be looking for the years where the Territory was sold.

If you want a second hand one you must ensure somebody already owns it and is looking to exchange it for goods or legal tender.

    Good luck!

Might be able to barter away one of your children for the car. First borns and white babies generally command a premium.

Can get double for blonde hair and blue eyed babies… got to be at least worth two diesel Territory vehicles…

Depends which part of the world! Black babies are all the range in some circles in Hollywood.

You should also look at ones priced between 20-25k.

The best Ford Territory you can buy is a Kia Sorento.

Seriously. I'm averaging 7.5l/100km on diesel, damn near bulletproof, and they're still using the same 2.2l 'R' diesel engine in all modern Kias and Hyundais (who are the parent company). Parts are cheap and plentiful, if ever needed - most part are dual-stamped. We've just rolled over 200,000km with not one significant mechanical issue.

Our specific purchasing reason was the split rear seats - we've gotta fit 4 kids + pram into one vehicle. Overnight trips to visit family & friends requires packing a trailerload of goods! … and towing that is effortless too.

Any 2010 models onward were starting at $16k or so, depending on variants/km etc.

    Here you go!

    • Brace yourself for the badge snobs…

      • "oh…..a foreign car….guffaw…a Korean car…….I wouldn't even let me butler haul rat faeces to tip with one of those….."

      • I don't think Ford people can be badge snobs…

        • Then you must not be a motorsport fan lol - the Red vs Blue rivalry runs strong!

    • Our specific purchasing reason was the split rear seats

Territory got a split rear seat from 2012 onwards or so

    • OK you've got me interested here…. anything to look for "problem wise" in a used one…. common issues? And should I be looking for one under 50,000km's?

I did thorough - REALLY thorough - research before buying ours in 2015. The summarised results:

        • Holden Captivas were unreliable. Just rebadged Daewoos. Do not touch.
        • Mazda, Isuzu 7 seaters were too new to have cost effective used models at the time, so I ruled them out
        • Hyundai Santa Fe is a clone of the Sorento, simply different body and badge. Also commanded a premium price, but otherwise identical
        • Ford Territory was cheap upfront, but thirsty (petrol especially), which meant over 5 years the Sorento's extra $5k I'd paid at the time was saved in fuel costs

Hence the reason the Sorento was the best bang for buck. And there were zero reports of any issues or faults I could find. None.

I bought mine at 150,000km, which seemed high (grey nomad caravan touring vehicle), but it's proven to be completely trustworthy and I have no reason to doubt that it will double that figure in the next few years.

        • great that gives me some confidence

Another happy Sorrento owner here.I'm watching "best 7 seater SUV awards"(under$60000) conducting by various organisations from atleast 2012.Sorrento(diesel)was in no.1 position until 2016.After they got Strong competition from Mazda CX-9 who changed their 6 cylinder engine to a small 4 cylinder turbo petrol engine which works like a Diesel engine. But with your budget Kia Sorrento is the best option

I have owned two Territorys and the main problems were all underneath the car. They both had the ability to go through diff bushes and suspension bushes. To test, just take one for a drive and listen for knocking noises from underneath the car.

My father-in-law had a Santa Fe diesel and he had no problems at all with it. It didn't handle as well, but it was a great vehicle.

    • ok good advice

  • Are you sure you want a Ford Territory? There are so many better competitors on the market that look and perform better as well as being more reliable.

    • Not necessarily, just always liked the space it has

I bought a 2nd hand 2012 Territory Titanium, really good value for what you get, especially for a growing family.

The territory is notorious for damage rear diff bush. When pulling off, if you hear a thump from the rear, that is a sign that they are gone. Looking at $750-$950 to get them replaced.

Also, if it is an AWD variant, you may need to replace the transfer case fluid. Just check the service history.

The major service at 90,000 is a kicker, so try and find one south of that figure or just over that has already been done.

      especially for a growing family.

This. I'm still yet to see a wider middle-row in an SUV of it's price range. Easily fits 3 car seats / 3 adults

I've got three car seats across my centre row (one of which is a booster). My 12yo clambers into the boot, which given the separation from his noisy younger siblings, he doesn't mind in the least :D

We did have the booster in the rear, and the LH side seat folding for access, but the wings of the centre car seat were a bit wide to comfortably roll the seat forward for access every day. Also, the older brother factor came into play…

I've owned a Ford Territory diesel for 5 years.
It has been a great vehicle, with no issues so far.
Very good economy, the handling and ride quality is top notch. Refined engine, performance and transmission are very good.
Large vehicle with comfortable/practical interior (more so if you get the 7 seat optioned one).
Sound proofing is good, it's quiet.
An overlooked vehicle and all round a good buy for the money.

  • Have you considered a BMW X5/Audi Q5/GLE?

    • slightly above my pay grade

      • What about a second hand one? E70 X5 xDrive 30d's can be found for around $20-25k, of course there are some that are over $50k too.

        • will take a look sure

  • We just traded in our 2007 Territory…once it got to 100,000km the suspension went which cost a couple of thousand and it needed re-doing two years later which is why we sold. Apart from the suspension there were no other major problems and the space in the rear seats with three kids is unbeatable. When replacing it we found it almost impossible to find a car when the middle seat in the rear wasn't basically an arm rest. Not comfortable for long trips. And the third row seats if you get a 7 seater are very handy so long as the kids are still little! We have a Pajero now which is a much bigger vehicle just to get the room across the back seats.

    • A Pajero is 'much bigger' than a Territory? I would have thought they'd be fairly similar.

I know our Pathfinder FEELS more spacious than the Prado we looked at at the same time though, despite being much the same size.

      • Yeah I've always found the Pajero to be fairly skinny

  • If I can make a suggestion look at Pickles Auction Group. I've done a quick search on there and there are at least 10 Ford Territory 2011 or newer running on diesel for under $25,000 as a fixed price not at auction. I bought one there last year which was an ex fleet vehicle. It had done 63000 ks and was clean inside and out. It came with new tires, 8 months rego, full service history and I was on the road for $19300. That included purchasing 5 years warranty on the vehicle where at least $3,000 worth of repairs would be done with no excess.
And no I don't work for them I'm just trying to get you a bargain this is ozbargains afterall

    • This is a little old, but I got a Ford Fairmont 2007 in 2011 from pickles. (4 years old at the time) for $14,000. It had done 14,000km and needed no work done to it other than basic services. This was an ex-military car. Pretty much sat its early years out at Richmond. Car has held up decently. Lots of little things like cracked plastic over the years (Nothing which Pickles has done, rather because it has sat outside since we owned it and because I believe Ford cheaped out on the plastics), but mechanically has held up perfectly.
I also obtained the two cars before this one from pickles. One in 2006 and the other in the late 90's. Both ran until they were written off in an accidenct.
