New Telephone Scam Involving "Warrants" and "Arrests"

Just thought I'd post up this interesting, although very stupid and poorly thought out scam.

Having many phone lines, I receive at least one scam call a day. This is one I have not come across. It rang into voicemail.

A pre recorded Siri like voice rings to inform someone (not name specific) that my offence has been escalated and am now going to be arrested. I am being called as this is my legal notice that they are legally required to give me before they storm my place and arrest me. The Australian government has a warrant for my arrest. To remedy the situation, a solution is ready for me. I have to call a NSW number (started with 02).

Ironically, the number read out wasn't clear.

They have gone through the trouble of using an e-voice, set up a cold caller, targetted a niche that is unlikely to pay for anything, and didn't make the return phone number clear.

Or maybe it is time I get my affairs in order to spend some time in the big house.

Edit - Listened to the phone call again. It is a warning for an immediate arrest for "tax avoidance" (exact words) and this phone call came after sending me a registered mail with forms to sign. They claim they have not received anything back so I have been served a formal warning that can be resolved if I call their phone number.

The number is 02 6061 4043.

Must be a common scam. When I googled the dialogue, ATO was the first hit and the link very clearly states that the ATO doesn't issue warrants for immediate arrests. There have been numerous similar attempts and I guess they aren't trying to take money directly. They are trying to grab information to impersonate and take out loans etc.

Again, the number is 02 6061 4043. Go nuts guys.

Hopefully some one writes their phone number into a code that spam dials them.
    Absolute scum

    • Hopefully that person also shares recordings for the amusement of others similar to what this guy did.

Yeah I have seen a stack of stuff on Utube.
My favourite was this one guy who dialled two scammers at once and joined them in a 3 way call.
Some of the scammers would get quiet heated with the other.
He just kept dialling their phone numbers to eventually they would not answer their phones.

There are some pretty good one out there to with people successfully gaining access to scammers merchant services and reversing all their transactions.

  • Did the Siri talk like an Indian? Hang up

    • Siri?

    • No. They must have got hold of a proper e voice. Probably fairly primitive as the speech was far from fluid.

There's also been calls pretending to be from the ATO. It has happened to myself, my dad and some friends.

If you have the caller ID they used could you please post it in here so it shows up in Google when someone searches for it?

Will try to decipher it when I am back at the office. Hope the secretary hasn't deleted the voicemail. I wouldn't have. It was entertaining.

  • There may be a small chance you just got served 7 days notice on warrants by phone?

    • The massive give away was that I am in Victoria and they called the one office number that we use as outgoing calls.

I may have stalled for a few extra split seconds had the phone number been Victorian and the phone call was to my mobile, or maybe a real voice with a local accent. How many scammers can afford a local voice talent ?

  • Sergeant Gershom here, and I've finally caught up with you my lad. Better get down to your local Western Union!

    • Would you accept itunes gift cards as payment? Coz its totally legit if you do.

      • or Lass?

  • You have to be a goose to ear this one
