Rental Car Travel Insurance

Hi.

We have hired a car from Hertz to travel from Melbourne to Sydney in late September.

I know insurance can be very expensive if bought from the car rental joints. Are you aware if we can purchase insurance from alternate sources that would cover us (comprehensive) and include roadside assist?

Thanks

I make sure my credit card has travel insurance which covers the excess of a hire vehicle.
I don't worry about roadside assist for a hire care… if the car has an issue then ring the hire car company.

Be careful - do check what your credit card insurance covers. Not all credit card insurance covers domestic travel.

      • This.

        Some cards/policy only cover international.

Yep, get travel insurance, and just read the PDS to make sure it includes rental vehicle excess within Australia. Should be cheaper than paying excess reduction to the rental company.

Remember that Insurance not provided via the Rental Company is a contract between you and your Insurer.
Should you damage the car, you will still have to pay the Excess as per your rental contract, and then put a claim in to your insurer.
These are 2 seperate contacts, One between you and the Rental Company, and one between you and your Insurer.
Don't think you can just give your Rental Company your insurance details and expect them to sort it out.

How long are you renting the car for? Assuming it's 2 days, you might be better off paying Hertz insurance cover?

Just did a quote from Tripcover, $26 for $4000 cover, 2 days.

I hired a car from Hertz for a one-way Sydney to Melbourne trip, 2 days, the insurance cover was $64. More expensive but I would say its worth it to not have to pay the excess upfront and wait to get it back, deal with the claims etc.

Hertz Roadside assist is $6.60 for 2 days.

Let us know how you go, enjoy the drive!
