Accessory Plates in Queensland - What Is The Deal?

Hey,

Looking at getting a bike rack for my car and saw I would need an accessory plate as it will cover the number plate.

I'm in Queensland and from what I can see is you pay the $78.50 for the plate through PPQ but then have to "customise" your plate or something for another $40 or whatever? Am I reading this correctly? Is it seriously 120 bucks to get this mini plate?……..

Any help to understand this would be great!

Thanks

  • Another rort from qld roads

  • The accessory plate numbers have to refelct whats on your car and the charge for this is $78.50

    Additional accessory plates are $29.20

    • So is the $78.50 to get the plate with your current number plate on it? - What is the "Customised" payment do you know?

      The website says the following:

Before you can order an accessory plate your plate number must be customised so that the accessory plate can be linked to your registration number.

      • Sorry don't know, but what cost does it come up with when you put in your vehicle rego?

        https://www.ppq.com.au/accessoryplates

        • Comes up with 78.40 - I mean if the PPQ website doesn't mention this Customised charge, then screw it I'll just get it from PPQ and act dumb lol

        • @Fergy1987: I think that is the customised charge. If you enter a plate that is already customised (eg TEA) it comes up $29.20

        • @ds98928392839:

Isn't the $29.20 charge for additional plates once you have paid for the initial one? When I checked my non customised plate it came up with $29.20 as I already had one.

        • @misa: no, we don't have an accessory plate but do have personalised plates and it is $29.20 for a new accessory plate. Try any personalised plate that already exists and you'll see.

  • I've been using a hand-written sign on my bike rack for years without any issues (and had plenty of cop cars driving behind me).
I'm in VIC but the rules are the same

    • Also in VIC. Don't know QLD rules but I did a similar thing to handwriting:

What I did was remove the number plate from the car, drill a hole in the centre of the plate and install it into the the "Accessory plate holder" hole of the bike rack (where I'm supposed to put purchase and use a number plate holder… sure!)

I always laugh when I see the handwritten signs, not so sure they're legit

  • +1

I've always used a handwritten sign until someone I know got a warning from a police officer for not having an approved identification on the bike rack.

    Btw this was in Qld

  • In QLD and always had a handwritten sign, never had a problem.
