My Experience Switching over to NBN(FTTN) from ADSL

Hi all,

Just wanting to share/vent what my experience is switching over to the NBN from ADSL and probably give others an idea of what to expect when switching over to NBN(FTTN).

It first started when I got a flyer in my mailbox saying that NBN is available in my area 3 months ago. I hesitated for a while because I get reasonably good sync speeds on my ADSL connection, about 17mbps download and 1mbps upload. However, ever since NBN became available in my area, I get frequent dropouts during the day, not a big deal, but it gets annoying after a while to have your connection dropped for about a minute or so every few hours. After a 2 months of that, I decided to sign up for NBN, thinking that since I am getting good speeds on ADSL, I am likely to get good speeds on NBN as well, maybe. 25mbps or 50mbps would be nice and the main thing for me would be the higher upload speed since in my household, whenever someone is uploading photos or doing video chat, it basically kills my connection because the 1mbps upload becomes saturated.

I am signed up with Belong, but I would imagine other ISPs would be similar. I logged in to my account console and picked a date for the NBN installation. For those who are IT savvy, I think this page is under Belong's account section, but is an iframed NBN booking page. There was a vacancy the Monday following week, so I picked that. The page says I should get a sms confirmation. I didn't get one. So on Monday, I logged in to see what is going on, there was a message that says my appointment has been cancelled. WTH? I picked another date, this time, in 2 weeks' time. Getting booked a few days in advance is apparently wishful thinking! 2 days later, I got an sms saying my booking has been confirmed. This was 2 weeks ago, late last week, I logged into my account console again to check and confirm. There was a message saying my appointment has been cancelled AGAIN. Double WTH? In frustration, I picked another date early next month.

Fast forward to yesterday, which was the date of the 2nd appointment, my internet went down in the morning, so I rang Belong to see what is going on. The lady on the phone told me that NBN is being setup on my connection, and I would be without internet for 24 to 48 hours. Great(that was a sarcastic great), no Game of Thrones for me till the internet comes back up.

I logged into my router later in that evening to check if I would really be without internet for 24 to 48 hours(cue sad music). The router said I was connected at 22mbps, and 6.4mbps upload, lights were green and I have an external IP address. I suddenly could see light at the end of the tunnel. Despite all that however, I still couldn't browse the internet. I thought I would give Belong a call to see if maybe they just need to flick a switch at their end or something. But alas, the man on the phone said, computer says no. Apparently, there is still software side of things that need to be done before I can get actual internet. I would be notified via sms when that happens. Expected timeframe is 3 to 5 working business days. Triple WTH? No internet for a few days. Oh! Pain and agony, not to mention the wailing screams coming from the rest of the household.

This is where I am at the moment. Sigh…

TL:DR Man's experience connecting to NBN, frustrations abound. First world problem. If you are thinking of jumping on the NBN bandwagon before you have to, don't do it.

Update 17/8: Your nbn order continues to be affected by an unexpected technical issue. Belong IT teams are working through remediation as priority. We will provide a further update in 7 business days if not rectified sooner.

Thanks for sharing. I will be in the same scenario in a few weeks when NBN (FTTN) will become RFS in my area.

    • Can I ask which suburb you are in?
    • How soon did you switch to NBN after it was declared RFS?

I'm thinking of holding off because I, like you, get around 17Mbps with my ADSL. The only saving I get is cost-wise. OTOH, my parents a few blocks away get around 3-4Mbps, so I figure I would up(?)grade them when the time comes.

    • Forest Lake. End of May this year I got the flyer in my mail.

Would it be saving if you are going from 17mbps to a 12mbps connection?

      • Sorry, in my scenario I'd be going to 25Mbps, but in the real world there likely isn't much difference between 17 and 25, hence why the only saving for me is cost.

        • Who are you going with, may I ask?

        • @geek001:
My parents are with TPG (Telstra phone + TPG ADSL), and I'm planning to move them to Telecube. I'm with Telstra (phone + ADSL). For both of us we'd be saving money switching to NBN.

        • @mastablasta:

          So your area don't have TPG's $59.99 - ADSL2+ incl. Home phone bundle ?

Else, NBN is more expensive considering ADSL2+ @ $60/month on 17mbps.

        • @phunkydude:
Yes, TPG does provide the bundle, but I did not move them onto it at the time because there was a chance my parents would lose their phone number by applying for the bundle. So I just left them on the Telstra + TPG combo.

  • Lol when i was with optus cable they said a week 2 months later they connected as they had to pull a new line to my house all in all am happy with my 100/40 notice a few slow downs in peak nothing major drops down to around 70/30

Was happy before with cable for downloads but loving the uploads with NBN.

    FTTN

That's one of the main problems. At the end of the day, your connection is still going through your old copper connection. It's really sad that as a developed nation, this is the state of our broadband.

    • Yes, it is pretty humiliating that our neighbours across the ditch has faster broadband? I remember a time when the reverse was true.

  • Why stay with belong after 2 cancellations? Why not pick someone else? Cannot see that it's the NBNs fault, belong are the ones stuffing you around.

    • The reason why I stayed with Belong is because my home IP address has been whitelisted by a lot of my clients. I was hoping that my existing IP address might be moved over to NBN, but I suspect that might not be the case. Belong technical support is pretty good if you have any technical issues. I guess this depends on how you look at it, if their network is any good, I wouldn't have to call technical support. :)

Finally generally, it is better to stick with the same provider for transitioning to avoid finger pointing. This applies to other utilities as well. I am planning to find a different provider after I actually do get NBN.

      • Fair enough, if they're the best of the bad lot your area is serviced by. Hopefully you can get into a more reliable and proactive company soon, good luck.

    Avoid belong.
    Go with AussieBroadband.
What you are describing is a crap company that can't do the basics. Why would you think it'll get better once you are connected?

    • Thanks for the recommendation. Do you know of any deals with them at the moment? Reviews seems to show that AussieBroadband is a decent provider.

        Ring them up.
They have ONLY local staff, that know what they are doing.
There is a first month free and double download limit if you mention 'whirlpool'.
        My story….FTTN
rang them, got first month free and double limit (500gb and 25/5)
bought modem from them - arrived before the appointment
        arranged appointment
bloke rang as he was on the way to the appointment to check i was in
        turned up on time
polite, knew what he was doing
helped me setup router (having taken off his boots without being asked)

during my first month, i upgraded to 50/20 for about a week, but that didn't really offer me anything i really needed, so went back to 25/5 - all calls answered by a LOCAL person, that spoke English as a first language and knew what they were talking about. all changes made within 10 mins of the call

        CAN'T praise ABB highly enough

      • Just have to use the search bar on Ozbargain to see the recent deal posted for AussieBroadband

  • This is something I won't have the pleasure of dealing with until the end of 2020 - assuming they're on schedule (ROFL). (profanity) Trumble.

    • I think their schedule is pretty accurate. I have lived through 2 NBN installation, this is my second time. First was a FTTP connection, and now FTTN. I am not sure if they will revise the schedule since you are quite far out, but closer to the time, it should be pretty accurate. I was scheduled for May 2017, and got a flyer closer to the end of May.

      • Well, I was originally scheduled for early 2018, then they quietly changed it to late 2020. I don't hold their schedule it high regard.

  • I'm so happy to be on FTTP :)

    • Don't be so smug! :) In the last house I lived in, I had to go through FTTP installation as well. There was an outage of a few days too back then, not sure about now. So for people that are getting FTTP, you should also expect an outage of a few working days.

      • Yes, but now I can switch providers or have multiple providers simultaneously within a few hours :) oh and no outages to do so!

        • Oh yes, you are right. Smug away then.

        • yes, I have fttp and last time I changed providers I had the new one (Belong) active and tested before cutting the old one (Internode). It was very convenient. I have VoIP for voice landline so no changes there.

      • i had zero downtime when i got my FTTP done last year, because i could leave the ADSL connected until the NBN was confirmed gold, i don't particularly want to give NBNCO any praise or props as downtime shouldn't be the expected just saying miracles happen

I think it's also a bit of 'you get what you pay for'.

I'm on FTTN with Telstra Business. 50 year old copper lines, ~800-100m from the exchange and get 40mbit all day long at any time. Install was pretty seamless, Telstra called me for each appointment and afterwards to make sure it was all ok. Even sent a tech out after it was all good and done just to make sure there was nothing else and that it was working as planned.

Data is about 600gb/month I think, which we don't chew through. The modem has an included 4G fall-over so if the line cuts out it automatically switches usage just comes off the standard plan. Includes landline and also came with a MicroSim for our iPad with 500mb/month which is paltry I know but we don't take it out and it's enough to look up a map or two.

Cost is $110/month. Yeah it might be much, but it always works, it's never slow even at 'peak hours' and I don't waste my time waiting for slow internet.

    • I'm in a similar position - over 1000m from the node (exchange is irrelevant on FTTN) and getting just shy of why you are getting in terms of speed, also all day long, without slowing during peak times. I'm only paying $59p/m though with Buzz and have unlimited data.

It depends on who you go with - Belong ("powered by Telstra") has metered data and have not the best reputation in terms of purchasing enough cvc to cater for peak demand. I've seen peoples connection slowing to 1-2mbps during peak times with them.

      • Sorry, I did mean 800-1000m from the node. Been on ADSL for so long I still call it an exchange my bad.

  • agreed

these unlimited / all you can eat things, are very poor providers at peak times……which is when most people want to use it !!!

pay a few more $$ and get a good product (i know that's against OzB rules) but heh

    • Agreed. Belong is not exactly cheap. I went with them at the beginning because they were "powered by Telstra". I expected a more "premium" experience and they were in the beginning. It got progressively worse over the last 2 years. I would actually be paying the same amount if I went with AussieBroadband. I will look into that when my NBN is actually up and running.

    • who would you suggest?

    • Not always the case. I just signed with Buzz Telco on a 100/40 plan (HFC) and I have had no problems with the connection and speed.

Even got the appointment quickly 6 days after the area went RFS. The NBN guy was a bit painful and the connection wasn't activated till the next morning as far as I could tell, even though all the lights were on but since it was been plain sailing. Hopefully that continues but no reason to consider it won't.

  • Belong, First Page of booklet. WAIT for activation SMS before installing your equipment.

  • I run a Facebook group for NBN discussion in my area and I hear stories like this allll the time. Including my own experience.

If you have an issue with NBN there's no 'higher power' you can appeal to. Your ISPs hands are tied, and the Telecoms Ombudsman doesn't deal with NBN - or at least they didn't till recently.

Our government has failed us, royally.

  • This isn't first world problem. This is first world with third or maybe fourth world internet. Two steps forward one step back!!

  • Your nbn order continues to be affected by an unexpected technical issue. Belong IT teams are working through remediation as priority. We will provide a further update in 7 business days if not rectified sooner.

I call bullshit on this. I rang them up and asked what the technical issue. Apparently the rep's answer was this was something they don't need to be aware of because it is an NBN issue. Great! How do you remediate if you don't know what the issue is?

Lesson to be learnt here, stay away from Belong and do not switch over to NBN till you absolutely have to.

  • Update: I rang up on Friday last week to chase it up, the rep said that I should wait 7 working days before calling back. I guess the guesstimate gets longer and longer. First it was 24-48 hours. Then I rang up the second time, it became 3 to 5 working days, now it is 5 to 7 working days.

Finally back online yesterday. According to the rep on the phone all the work was done on Friday last week, so I should have received an activation sms. I guess if I didn't ring up yesterday, I will still be without internet.

Did speed tests the whole day yesterday, only getting about 5mbps most of the day, got about 15mbps at about 11pm last night. Upload seems to be consistent at around 4-5mbps. Would I have switched now that I know what NBN is like? Probably not. I was getting about more than 10mbps actual throughput during the day on ADSL, only slow to about 2-4mbps during peak times.

  • That is great information. I am currently on Optus cable and relatively happy as no one on the street uses cable anymore so I have most of the bandwidth to myself. I was thinking of switching to NBN like many of my friends but have heard horror stories about it. Thanks for posting.

  • Final update: I have been getting dropouts throughout the day so I rang Belong to look into it. The rep lodged a ticket with NBN Co. The end result? I must been put on a more conservative profile or something. Now my sync speed on the modem is around 16mbps. The dropout issues seems to have been fixed. So the end result is that I was on about 17mbps on ADSL2+ and now I am on about 16mbps on NBN FTTN. Not sure whether to laugh or cry.
