Decent 50" Smart TV < $1200 (Mainly Used for Netflix)

Been looking for a new smart TV. Current TV is hisense and around 7 years old. We mostly use Netflix on the tv so ideally it would be able to have a built in app. We currently use Chromecast.

I've been waiting for some deals and missed the latest LG one. Originally had a budget of $1000 but think this may be a bit unrealistic? Can anyone recommend particular brands or models which may fit the bill. Probably not a Soniq or the like, as I hear their smart TV functions are not great.

If i'm being overly optimistic for something in that price range, be good to know that as well. Thanks in advance.

  • I think the price range is fine. I had the exact same requirements as you (basically, the biggest / best 4k TV I could get for under $1000). Ended up with a 58" Hisense Series 5 for $931 shipped.

Pretty sure if you search the current 20% of selected tech stores (ie use the link that lets you search all the participating stores on ebay) and search for TVs there you should easily find something for under $1000 after the code is applied.

Edit: as an example, both of these should be in budget, after discount

    • Nice one, thanks for the response. Do you utilise the smart functions of your TV? If so, whats it like. I know my brother in law has a recent Hisense and it takes quite a while to initally boot up, in turn I imagine that any smart function would have a degree of lag associated with it. Will have a look at the links. Cheers.

I haven't got mine yet, so can't really answer this one sorry. To be honest it isn't a big concern- I use an Intel NUC as a home theater PC so I don't really use most of the smart TV functionality anyway.

    • I have the same hisense model. Comes with dedicated Netflix button which I wasn't fussed about but actually end up using everyday.
Tv itself is great value for money

  • Sony are having a Sale on some TV's atm http://store.sony.com.au/tvhometheatre-tv-4khdrtv#tvhomethea…

7000 run basic OS seems to do netflix
8000 and above run Android TV and have Chromecast built in.

    • Cheers, ill check it out. Is either netflix or android TV/Chromecast seen as generally more desirable?

I have a Sony Android TV and definitely recommend you go for that! Firstly yes Netflix works amazingly well on it, dedicated remote button too so you can actually boot the TV straight to netflix. the Youtube android app is also ripper, better than any youtube on TV i've ever seen.

You may only want to use netflix at the moment, but there are a lot of android apps you might like using such as Plex (my fav) or Kodi for to play media you have on your PC or a hard drive. With built in chromecast you can stream so many things from your phone or computer, without having to buy the $45 dongle and connect it each time.

Try out the android TVs in store and look through the Google Play store - may be more apps that appeal to you that i don't know of.

        • Thanks for the input. Are the 8000's only fairly new? I saw the 43 inch one relatively fits in with the budget but looks like I may be spending a bit more if I want to go larger then this (around $1400). Might be worth keeping my eyes open to see if they ever go on sale.

        • @163855: I think they are pretty new because I thought the latest were model number X8500 until I clicked the above link.

I notice those TVs are 4K HDR, you could get a cheaper one that is HD only if that suits you, that's what I did too in 2016.

Stay away from Sony Andriod TVs. Buggy as f….Sony would not recognise any issues and told me to suck it up.

Everytine it freezes or won't turn on I'm edging closer to smashing it

  • Why not just add a decent android box to your current TV?

    • I guess this is an option, its another remote and box which ideally we wouldnt have. I was also going to move existing TV to another room, thus requiring an upgrade of TV anyway. I'll have a look into the android boxes though, cheers.

    • or just get a xbox or ps4

Display and viewing angles are fantastic.
If you are a big Netflix user like me - it's also a "Netflix recommended TV", which means it launches really quickly, and you can turn the TV off and it will resume straight into Netflix when you switch it back on.

  • If I were in the market for a new smart TV I would be looking to avoid the premium of a 'Smart' TV and just buy a Chromecast 2 or Chromecast Ultra (4K). Mind you its been a while since I was in the market so probably can't even get a non smart TV these days.

Bonus is that it is controlled by your phone. Also if you get a HDMI-CEC compatible TV (Which I imagine most are) then you can be watching TV, cast from your phone and it will force the TV to shift to that input. So you don't need to even switch the input on the remote for netflix etc.

A cheap 32inch Samsung TV that I bought 3 years ago has HDMI-CEC so I would wager that most TV's come with that by default but worth checking.
