AmEx "Apply for a Different Card That Is Part of This Referral Program"

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same as me:

I have an American Express Platinum Edge card. It's the only Amex card I have.
My fiance wanted to apply for an Amex, so I sent her my referral link that I got from my online account.

However, when she scrolled down the page, there is a section there titled "Apply for a different Card that is part of this referral program", where the Platinum, Essential and Explorer cards are listed. I tried this with a random referral on OzB and the same options appear, so it doesn't seem to be a result of my specific referral link, but any Platinum Edge's referral link.
EDIT: Just tried a random Explorer referral link and a similar result is obtained.

If she clicks on the link for the Explorer, gets approved, and then spends the $1500, she will get the 100,000 points as this will be her first Amex.

However, given she got to this application via my Platinum Edge's referral link, will I get any sort of referral points? I know that I'm on Ascent and Explorer is on Gateway, but has anyone had any success with this, whether or not the card applied for is in the same MR scheme as the current card?

Any stories, success or otherwise, greatly appreciated. Would love to see whether any OzBargainer has used this referral system successfully this way.

Cheers,
MathNerd

  • This was one of the technical issues we had to deal with for the AmEx referrals. If you are a cardholder of one, you will have other cards on your referral page. Each card in a group will have a different link.

    The groups are the following:

    • american express essential credit card',
    • american express explorer credit card',
    • american express platinum card',
    • american express platinum edge credit card'

    and

    • david jones american express card',
    • david jones american express platinum card',

    and

    • qantas american express discovery card',
    • qantas american express premium card',
    • qantas american express ultimate card',

    and

    • american express velocity escape card',
    • american express velocity platinum card'

Technically the referral would be OK despite the referrer not having the card as it is presented on the page but interested to hear if anyone can confirm for sure.

    • Thanks Neil.

I am with you on this: "Technically the referral would be OK despite the referrer not having the card as it is presented on the page but interested to hear if anyone can confirm for sure.", I looked online and googled but most results are hits from Canadian websites relating to "self-referrals". There seems to be no publicly available Australian information, unless my Google skills are seriously lacking :P

Hopefully there's at least a few OzBers who have experienced success with referrals in the same "group".

      Cheers

      • Well, this wasn't always the case. They were separated up until a month or so ago and then they changed their interface. Might be worth pinging live chat for sure.

        • Thanks, will give that a shot. Hopefully I'll have some good results to report back to the OzB community.

        • Neil, I've only used Secure Messaging, until they changed to Live Chat. Ever since the change I've experienced this issue, the lack of a Live Chat button. I've tried different browsers, incognito mode, stock settings, everything under the sun all with the same result.
Do you experience the same? I'm really perplexed as to why it is happening.

          @MathNerd:

I've experienced that as well. I believe you have to live chat during business hours as it won't show up after hours.

        • @neil: interesting, thanks. They do market it as a 24x7 live chat so it's a bit strange this is occurring, but thanks for putting my mind at ease that they haven't 'disabled' live chat for my account :)

    • Hi Neil, so sschen confirmed that there's 15,000 bonus points for the referral (the same as referring a platinum edge). This is great news!

I have an AMEX Platinum Edge Card. Brother in law wanted to apply for the new AMEX Explorer card last month, and he wanted to use my AMEX Platinum Edge Referral Link. Since there is nothing for me to lose, I gave him my referral link even though I was skeptical I will get the bonus points. A week after he put in the application, I noticed 15000 bonus points magically appeared on my AMEX account! :)

So yes, I believe you should get 15000 bonus points from your referral since your case is identical to mine. :)

    • Thank you very much sschen. This is exactly the success story I was looking for. Cheers, looking forward to some sweet bonus points :)

For all those following along, missus got approved Wednesday night, 15,000 points landed in my account this arvo, so you can certainly refer people to any card in the same referral program group :)
