really only good if you fly ALOT, as the membership fee still applies :(

  • +10

You might save the "joining fee" of $370 but you still have to pay out $435 to be a member.
Same old story….. nothing for nothing :)
and i was all excited to become a member "for free".

    • Yep. I think in the past they have offered 50% membership fee for new member for the first year on top of the free joining fee. But even then, it is quite useless unless you fly a lot (like once a month or something).

  • +5

$435 isn't free (no join fee implies $0).
    please correct post title.

  • +1

I can foresee lots of negative votes.

    • You can silence my vote, but two more will take my place.

Seriously, why persist in the fiction that is is a "vote"? Sounds like democracy North Korea style.
If you want a benevolent dictatorship, fine.

      • Agreed. What point is voting if there are rules against voting one way?

        • +4

          because some people are idiots.

        • There are clear rules for voting negative.

Just because you do not like something, do not think it is useful, do not think your dog will like it does not mean it is a bad deal and is no reason to vote it negative.

  • The one really useful part of this is that you get extra baggage allowance. An extra bag to/from the US and an extra 10kg elsewhere. Since excess baggage on long haul flights can easily be $50+/kg this can quickly pay for itself on even 1 or 2 flights.

    • But isn't the standar rule for travel to USA always been two bags upto 30kg each?
60kg is heaps and wouldnt want to lug around more or has that rule changed ?

But yeah extra 10kg for other routes be good but still need to be doing the traveling to make it count.

      • jetstar is only 20kg for the economy flights unless you spend on premium

    • Depends on how often in that 1 year you need that extra.. some other airlines are quite lax with just 1 article instead of 30kgs

  • +1

being a member that has been a part of ozbargain for as long as you have and posted as many threads as you have, you should know better than to post such a misleading bargain. You could have atleast written down a quick comment about it, rather than just copy the site!

Fix the title, or I will return to neg you lol!

  • Good deal if you are a traveller, crap deal if your not, negative voter if you don't care about bargains for the minority….albeit probably a very small minority.

  • good deal, however OP fails to provide sufficient details on the deal. negged

      and not a bargain.

So saving hundreds of dollars is not a bargain?

  • Thanks, this helps since I will be doing a lot of flying next year for work. Bargain for me, since they hardly ever do specials on Qantas Club and lounge access can make the many work trips bearable.

  • misleading title but still a good deal if you were thinking of joining.

  • Good deal for anyone who has business travel and can select QF.
Thanks thewinchester. Enjoyed our catchup with FTers at the ADL QF last time. :)

Anyone who has the opportunity to get a number of QF domestic or intl flights should appreciate this.
Anyone interested should visit frequentflyer.com.au for updates on QFF since the program is about to introduce some new fees for a few things like over-limit bags.

  • +3

The prices are a total ripoff for individuals. I am a member via a corporate scheme and the annual fee is $230.

    • likewise…. $230 joining fee and then $300 or $530 for 1 or 2 years membership respectively.

why would anyone actually think this is a bargain… dont ppl realise how airlines work these days, loyalty always gain you well less than new customers.

not to mention, most of the ppl here take budget in domestic.so now joining the membership for $435, and pay more for the ticket. even with local flight.

The entirety of responses on this post is proof positive that OzB has gone to the dogs.

This is a quick summary of the negative responses so far:

    • "I don't like the company so I'll neg"
    • "It's not absolutely, completely and totally free, so I'll neg"
    • "I don't understand enough about it to know why it's a deal, so I'll neg"
    • "I've got to go off and read more information about the deal on the company's site, so I'll neg"

    Bunch of spoilt children.

    • +1

Sorry, went to give a +ve vote and accidentally clicked on -ve. How do I change it……

      • Unfortunately there is no way to change votes on comments

    • +3

Spoilt? Most people on here are super cheap/stingy!

    • +3

You are totally right…just cuz the deal is not the one you expected it to be, but has no misleading title/intro doesn't mean you have to neg it. I too expected it to be fully free, but of course there was a membership fee.

Yet no neg cuz the post is correct and it's a bargain for frequent flyers who were gonna join Quantas. Why are people so stingy with their positives..it's free..FFS.

Negging it means people looking to join will now treat this as fake :( which it is not.

      • Initially the title was very misleading but has now been changed.

I didnt neg cos its a good deal if you had been considering joining.
not too sure how many "individuals" would be members unless it was a business deduction and you travelled a lot.

    • +2

I agree to an extent, I am concerned by corporate bias and mob rule on OzBargain at times.

      However, I disagree with this:

      • “I don’t like the company so I’ll neg”

Since a company and the product/service it delivers cannot be completely separated, if the company is legitimately "disliked" then this will influence the quality of the experience and ultimate value/impact of a product or service.

Different citizens will differ about what is legitimate, though.

  • +4

Why can't you just put the membership fees in the description?

    • +3

Agree. If it was there, there would not have been that many neg comments, including me.

    • +5

I agree, its a lot of time and effort to click through LOL - yes I am being sarcastic. If you were a regular flier who could get value out of membership you would already be aware of the fees and the over the top joining fee.

    • +1

Why are people so lazy that they cannot click onto the Qantas website and look for themselves?
The deal clearly says that the joining fee is free, it mentions nothing about membership fees as they are not being discounted.

If they were actually wanted to sign up then they would need to click through.

The deal is not about the price of membership, it is that the joining fee has been waived.

      • It just gave the implication that it was completely free, I don't agree with the negs, but the OP could have at least put "Membership fee still applies". Anyway the mod has revoked those unwarranted negs.

        • That implication was made by Qantas, you will note the OP has copied it word for word in the interests of being accurate, and on the assumption that those interested would click through for more details while sparing the rest the need to read a long post.

          • +4

@markis10: Go read the posting guidelines, op should of spelt it out since he is recommending the deal

  • +3

ok after much reading, this is what i've interpreted it as.

Joining fee is free (normally $370) - this is what the deal is about
but then you have to pay for the membership fee which is $435 for 1 year

On website though it states A$435 (normally A$805), so then technically its not free, this post should be 'join qantas club and save $370 for 1st year but still have to pay $435' then yeah?

    am i confused?

    • +1

Yes, this post has been badly written.

There was no real effort by the OP to explain to the hoi-polloi (moi included) why this should be considered such a bargain.

  • +1

The QANTAS lounge usually offers unlimited food and drinks (e.g. beers). I don't see how anyone could have thought they would give this away for free.

Think of this as a Gym membership. If someone put up a post that said, Doherty's Gym-No joining fee for 90 hours, save $150, you would still assume that you are going to pay Gym fees.

    • No joining fee for Doherty's Gym? Where's the gym location? No clear description from the mod, negged. :)

Seriously though, Qantas Business lounge is ok, nothing's too special. Many airports around the world offers the same facilities for free if you are lucky enough to be a platinum / preferred member of certain financial institution. Same unlimited food and drinks, including minibar stuffs.

Qantas First lounge though, now that's quite special.

    • -1

perhaps i am just living is odd places. my citibank creditcard with no annual fee gave me free access to any citi lounge around the world. and yes free food and free drinks too…

      • +2

        what card do you have?

Qantas lounges are in Australia, there are no Citibank lounges in Australia, they are in Asia
Last time i checked you needed an Asian issued citibank card to have any lounge access.

mod - removed emotive speech from the question

        • +1

really? i thought its worldwide, yes the card is overseas card.

          brief search using google
          http://www.creditcardoffers.com.au/citi-select-credit-card.h…

seems like its in australia too…

          • @overlook: jasecs, nice find. As I understand it, it's unlimited access as Priority Pass lounges where there are a few in Australia.

The downside of it though is:

            • Earn a taxable income of $120,000 p.a. or more
            • @neil:

              Annual Fee of $700

            • @neil: I wouldn't see it as a downside if I was earning 120,000 per year - infact I'd be pretty happy to be earning that ;-)

          • @overlook: Look at the card. It costs a $700 a year

The lounge access is not from the citibank card either, you are enrolled in Priority Pass which is separate to Citibank lounge access

        • Politeness has its own place in a civilised world. Good luck with your life tho.

PS: Like "jasecs" below said, if you've checked last time, then maybe it's worth it to check again and stop being lazy yourself (just because you scold other as being lazy in your comments few lines above).

          Nuff said. I'm out.

          • @vwh:

PS: Like “jasecs” below said, if you’ve checked last time, then maybe it’s worth it to check again and stop being lazy yourself (just because you scold other as being lazy in your comments few lines above).

I did not need to check anything, I know that there is no free Australian issued citibank card which gives you free airport lounge access.
I asked the question so jasecs could explain his reasoning and that his card is not an Australian issued card. To me it made more sense than simply making a statement or just telling them they are wrong. (Would you rather be sked to explain yourself or just be told you are wrong? The first seems more polite to me)

The card jasecs then mentioned costs $700 per year and is not the card he or she has. (I was already well aware of the Select card but it isnt free)

As I said (and jasecs agreed on) they have a card which is not Issued in Australia so is not relevant as it will not be available to Australian ozbargain members.
This is why I asked what card he/she had so they could correct themself.

  • -4

A joining fee…? A membership fee as well…??? Come on… :-( The bargain component is missing here.

    • So you dont think a discount of $370 is worthwhile of being posted here?

    • So you are saying something that is close to half its usual price is not a bargain, that getting free alcoholic drinks (inc spirits) & food, free internet and PC access for a year with your sub when you fly with Qantas is not a bargain when its close to 1/2 price, as well as preferential seating? Try doing 5 return flights a year and see what it costs you in food etc while you are waiting for your plane!

      • 5 return flights? That's probably not enough to regain the 435 joining fee…

I do 10 return flights/year…I still don't think it's worth the money. But hey, if you can get to the airport 2~3 hours early everytime…yes it'll be worth it.

      • +2

If you are single and live near the airport it might be extrenely good value.
Spend a few nights or so there every week "socialising" and having your meals and drinks.
probably end up cheaper to "live at the Qantas lounge " than eat at home…….

        • Can you go to the Qantas Lounge at any time or only before/after a flight?

          • +1

@arcticmonkey: No you need a boarding pass for that day/night for either a Qantas or Jetstar flight. There are conditions for access if you are flying a One World alliance airline.

            • @carlenet: Darn; $435 for food and accommodation for a year sounded like good value :)

  • Hmm… very tempting!

    Thanks for the post.

  • This is good if you travel internationally a lot. If you are a Virgin/Tiger/Airasia customer, I can understand why you would neg this.

  • I'm staggered that there are 29 positive's on this 'deal'. The deal is only relevant to people who travel very frequently and have to spend a lot of time waiting at airports. Whilst I travel frequently I always organise direct flights and minimise my down time. The market for this is business people who will almost always have their business pay for membership.
Qantas are using disceptive techniques to try and capture some more market here. This post just promulgates that and brings down the reputation of OB in the process. I come to OB for the good sauce not marketing scams.
    Negged.

    • +4

The deal is only relevant to people who travel very frequently and have to spend a lot of time waiting at airports.

      which isn't you I presume….but…it's a big world out there and….. it's not all about you……

The market for this is business people who will almost always have their business pay for membership.

and….. there may be some business owners on here who will be very happy with this deal…..

      • -1

Whoever said it's about me - do you always counter a cogent argument with some sort of personal dig?

As it happens, I am a business owner (if one-man businesses count), and I've made 10 flight so far this year. I don't feel this deal is worth it to me. Of course someone else in a similar position might well decide otherwise, especially if they have longer delays and/or travel with colleagues.

I never said it would not be relevant to anybody. I said it was only relevant to a few.

The main point of my argument is the deceptive nature of this marketing. I want to save time… the thing I really like about OB is the high quality of information provided. People post up the bargains they think worthy, and the rest of us provide some opinion if it's a subject we know something about.

Well, at least that's I do.

        • I don’t feel this deal is worth it to me. Of course someone else in a similar position might well decide otherwise, especially if they have longer delays and/or travel with colleagues.

          so why neg the deal?

Opinions on a company's marketing strategy are interesting….but negging the deal bans the poster and potentially removes the deal that, as you say, others may find useful, (irrespective of any marketing strategy).
Surely a neutral vote with a comment would be more appropriate?

          • +3

@andy19363: You know what - I agree with you.
The reason I negged was that I felt the deal was worded in a way that could lead people to think the first year was free.
However I didn't understand the full impact of negging.
Your right this should have just been a comment as I don't want to impact the OP.
Now I need to find a mod and rectify my neg.

            Update:
Found the view/votes links at the top of the page and was able to revoke my neg.
This removes my neg from view altogether and makes your comments look out of context now.
So, I'll acknowledge what you said and say I agree it shouldn't be negged but commented on to make clear what the offer is. The updates to the OP by the mod do a good job of that now.

      • +3

  • Deal is a bargain, but since this bargain is aimed at
non regular flyers with or without qantas, op could have avoided all this confusion by Telling us there was a member fee as well, the fact he is sooking about it is proof enough to me !

  • Do you have to pay the joining fee after the 1 year is up? E.G if I renew my 1 year membership next year after taking this offer would it be $435 or $805.

Also stop being haterz with the negative posts, I am a frequent traveller and this seems like a good deal to save $370. Hehe free beer and food in the Qantas lounge! Love it.

    Happytribe.

    • Joining fees are one time only fees to join a club.

  • Priority Pass lounges = All Domestic Virgin Blue Lounges in Australia

    • +1

A Prestige priority pass membership costs 400 US Dollars which is about the same as a 1 year qantas membership.

To bring in a guest with priority pass will cost you $30, with qantas it is free.

  • +1

if you flying for corporate reasons, check with ur company
as qantas usually does reduced qantas club prices for companies
only cost me 200 bcuks if i wanted it (not a manager so dont get it for free)

  • This info may not be for all and the title may make you misunderstand.
However our comapny is about to save several hundred dollars (for two new staff) thanking to your posting.

  • +2

This is a deal; having the joining fee waived is really good. Being in Q club you get 10kg extra luggage, priority check in, free drinks / food, showers and on departure upgrades.
I bought this at $804 with the joining fee then flew enough to get gold status and it then comes free. I don’t understand why this is not a bargain to some people. A saving of $370

  • lol at the tightass bogans voting negative for this deal 'cause it's not technically "free". if i was a member of the qantas club the last thing i'd want is a bunch of cheapskates invading the qantas club lounge.

  • This seriously is a great deal.
I dont even know why there are negs on this…

  • What booze can i have in the quantas?

    • +2

      None…quantas doesn't exist! ;)

      • LOL.

The Club has a good selection of premium beers, wines, spirits and selected mixers on hand that'll satisfy most tastes.

        • I think what's available depends on which club you go to and what time of the day it is (or it used to).

ie you only had access to the fridge and not the spirits if it wasn't during hours when someone operated the bar (if the club has a bar)

      • Yes it is.
