Uber Driver - Records Not Kept (GST Question)

I was an ubie driver in the last financial year and didn't maintain any records or receipts for GST purpose (my mistake). I got the receipts of my car insurance, rego etc but nothing for fuel and car maintainence related expenses.

I got this summary from Uber showing I drove 15,000 km. Is there any way to calculate the GST based on the kms? And what other expenses can be claimed?

  • You need to see a Tax Accountant. You will also need to lodge BAS statements in relation to your GST.

Have you given Uber you ABN and indicated that you're paying GST?

Uber has recently changed the ABN & GST declaration form and requires you to enter it even if you've done so before. Here's the link showing how to do that: https://help.uber.com/h/e37a0a65-3bfa-4beb-adf9-28347bc60786

Also quickly check what percentage Uber has been charging on the fare. Divide Uber's fee by the Total fare and multiply by 100. If its 27% that means that you're not GST registered. It should be 25%.

I say definitely consult a tax accountant there's no way around that. If you're still driving use a log book to log kilometers.
